dash light turns on when lights on why??

dash light turns on when lights on why??
First what is the dash light that looks like a bulb with lines around it. It only turns on when I turn the head lights on? Any idea?

Well if it only comes on when you turn on your headlights, it could be a number of bulbs. Possibly your headlights, but it could be a tail light or any of the console lights that come on when your headlights are on.

It's for external lights only (or at least only in my experience)
Check the obvious, headlights, tailights, third brake light, turn signals, driving lights (rear ones that stay on when headlights are on), front fogs, rear fog and the one that goes overlooked allllll teh freakinnnnnn time is this one on both sides:
And for future reference, from left to right:
High beams (duh), battery (duh), parking brake (duh), oil level/pressure (duh), coolant level, washer fluid (duh), exterior bulb out, ABS malfunction (duh), SRS malfunction (duh), ASR malfunction (duh, but not on all cars), and the last one is an obvious duh.

Hey Chinney you missed one! The brakepad light.
And you may be correct about the indicator only being for outside lights. It does make plenty of sense.

Yes, the bulb out indicator is only for outside bulbs. DO check the circled one on that drawing, it's usually that one. If it were a signal light, it would flash double the speed....those are an easy tell.
Also check the third brake light ( need 2 people or back up to a reflective surface.)

If its dark out, you can see the light leak from around the casing of the third brake light IF it is working. No light leak, no worky. Rear brake light is Sylvania Part Number 7506= 1156 for other number systems.

Hopefully its not the 3rd brake light. Those tabs break so easily from years of sun exposure. the retards installing my tint broke them and didnt tell me, and every one Ive seen at the junkyards is wrapped in electrical tape for the same reason.
