Mercedes benz 1991 300ce(RIP), now an 89 300ce
sounds like a vacuum leak is happening in the locking system. that sound youre hearing is the vacuum pump continuing to run even after the car unlocks.

also, the vacuum pump is under your rear bench, which is why the noise is coming from back there

Not sure if this will help. There is thread on this website (or benzworld) regarding vacuum system for the S class and how to fault find and actually repair the pump (12 months and still running). If you can not find let me know and I can post as I have a copy on my home computer.

I just started having this problem a few weeks ago, my mechanic fixed the problem by plugging a vacuum leak and it worked fine then a few days ago it started again so i either have a new leak or the plug came out

The best thing to do is wait for the pump to stop running which it does automatically

lots of cars
My alarm decides to leave my car open at night. I'll lock it and it does lock but when i look at my car in the morning it's always unlocked and the alarm is on. It's not really a problem since nothing has ever been stolen...
