I've got an 88 C124 and a 94 A124 and to me the clusters look very much alike and the lighting seems the same...

But I'm kind of old...

I have a bunch of clusters and I've only noticed the vac gauge on early models and are variations of the idiot light icons.

It's the same, including lamp wattage and location....back may be missing the red fuse, but otherwise no difference !!!

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that the prizms where upgraded in the latter years. Maybe they were made bigger?

images from a MercedesShop DIY Article:

The prisms just reflect the light around the cluster. Bigger prisms, bigger reflection?

Also, it's important to note that on the older instrument clusters the speedometer is mechanically gauged. You may run into a problem when getting the newer cluster to work in the older cars as the New clusters are Electronically gauged, the are not compatible. Not sure what year this change occurred, venturing to say '90. Check the back of an older cluster and a newer cluster.

Older=screw on Newer=plug in.

May be wrong on that but, it's what killed my upgrade when I tried putting in a '94 cluster in my '86.

Me thinks that the majority of 124 speedo's are mechanical....with the exception of the 124.034/036 V8 cars which are electronic.

Looks as if I can fit those prisms in the older cluster, no? I might have to look after that. The cluster could sure stand to be lit brighter at night.

LEDs throw harsh and directed light. I want to maintain the even light that the filament bulbs provide. I just want more of it.

That makes sense, seeing as I was trying to put a E420's cluster in my 300E...
Good to know, thanks.
