The unit on the back of the transmission houses all of the 5th gear items. Everything before the rear housing on the transmission is exactly the same as a 4speed 722.3. The valve body is the same except the rear section that has the overdrive solenoid.
Even if you lost 5th you could drive it forever without it.
Do not try taking the transmission apart yourself. The rear unit has a sprag in it that takes an act of God to get back together unless you have done it before.
Good luck.
Even for W140 (the top end Mercedes at the time) the 5 speed was not available till 1996.

So...would you be so kind to let us know how do you end up with 5 speed on 1993 320CE??
Your car must be the only one in the world? If I am wrong, I will apologize but I never knew that they put 5 speed on a W124/93 model.
I have a 5-speed on the above. It's a Sportline and the transmission's worked fine until recently.
Mine now has the following symptoms:
1. Under normal acceleration, it selects 4th gear for, say, half a second and then shifts to 5th and stays there.
2. Change down only occurs to 3rd so there's a great deal of lag when accelerating again ofter slowing. Basically, it seems to be 'wanting' 4th, is unable to select it until one slows sufficiently for it to select 3rd. Then it's back to 5th, touching on 4th, as you accelerate.
Someone advised me to remove the transmission 'brain' so I did and the thing wouldn't start so I gave up on that.
Any other ideas one and all?
Best wishes from la France.

It's nice to have a vehicle like that, but if it runs into problems, looks like i am the only one to face it in north america~

I have a 1996 Sportline Cabriolet that has a 5 speed trans. Commonly available in New Zealand & Australia on the whole 124 range of bodies except possibly for the LWB Limo??

I just looked at the owners manual for my 1992 280E (UK model, 1992) and the 5 speed is listed for the 280E, 320E and 320CE.

The 5 speed (722.5) has an electrically controlled overdrive or 5th gear, so an electrical issue is the lost likely culprit. There is a solenoid which controls the 5th gear. Also the selector switch could be faulty.
I have an Australian delivered E320 coupe that came standard with the 5 speed. It does not have a selector switch.
