EARLY AMG STEERING WHEEL

Picked up a period AMG / MOMO KBA steering wheel with a 124/201 hub on EBAY for $51 + $20 shipping.

Needs to be refinished...unusual as it doesn't have the typical black rim.
I'll dye the leather Palomino and do the center in a satin black.
If I can't find the proper AMG emblem, I'll just do the three pointed star.

Now if I can find a Gen I body kit...

Joe

Accumulating parts...
Nothing can really start until I get the wheels from the UK.

Hope to begin in about two weeks ?

I'm looking at the Vis/Eurotech body kit as it seems like a close replica to the AMG Gen 1....
Would like to find a kit that would accept the stock bumper impact strips as I decided I want to leave them black like the original car.

Will probably stray from the original widebody by adding heat extractors to the hood, similar to the Mosselman 320CE Silver Arrow.

Nice find and great price. I used to have that Italian wheel with an AMG embossed center. Be careful of the horn buttons, I've never found replacements.

Hey this reminds me -- In my 260E the rubber seems to have lost its glue on the inside and it rotates at a little at the top + bottom. Is there any way that I can get the rubber glued on the inside again or will I need to strip all the leather off and redo it?

Not sure what rubber you refer to...
Always a way to reglue without ripping something apart even if you need to use a syringe to get under the outer surface...

or replace with a '90+ wheel, it's leather wrapped. Early E's have molded rubber.

I have a '90 wheel with airbag that I'd let go for cheap if someone wants it...

I was thinking about getting that wheel, but didn't think it was going to go THAT cheap, nice score.

I was watching it as it sat at $15.99 until I bid at the last few seconds.
Only three bidders including myself and the max bid by the last highest bidder was only $50.00.
I thought it would go for well over a $100.00 +

Sometimes you get lucky...

Expensive but much nicer looking if you don't mind me saying. Was yours for the US market only ?

Really wasn't a USA market only wheel...there were several types all made by MOMO.
They were the KBA series which had several variants in the center hub and rim...

The wooden rim that you show is fantastic and unusual as most of the 124 cars were leather covered in black.

It was typical early AMG where you could select ala carte what suited your taste

How difficult/time consuming is it to replace the wheel? (talking with airbag) Does the airbag have to be removed or does it stay in place with the wheel?

I might be interested in that wheel....I could put it in my wagon and then put the wagons in the 260E as its nicer condition.

How lucky could I be ????

Wheel came in and other then a peeling black paint job on the rubber center pad it is perfect !!!!

What is even better is that the color described as "salmon" by the EBAY seller ends up as "Palomino" which is the color of my interior !!!

Unusual as most of the early wheels were all black...this is all Palomino with the black spokes and horn buttons...

Should be an easy restoration...

Thank you.

I need to order a hub from Germany as the wheel has a three point mount, unlike the Italian wheel six point mount.

I thought it was a Momo but in researching after I received it found out it was an ATIWE "Silberfeil" ( Silver Arrow ) type KBA, made in Germany and a supplier to AMG.

The hub that I need to purchase is an offset configuration.

Will not be able to document for a few months as the car is off tomorrow for the beginning of it's bodywork to convert it to a replica AMG widebody, similar to the 1988 320CE.

I refinished the wheel over the weekend...it's has perfect padding, leather and stitching !!!

ATIWE hub on order, just need an old AMG logo emblem.
They are difficult to find so I'll probably end up using a Merc star..

When the car is back from the body/paint shop it will go on !!!

Looks great!

It sure looks like my old Italian wheel with a different hub cover:

I thought it was a MOMO wheel until I received it.
Did research on the numbers stamped on it and the "Made in Germany" and found the maker to be ATIWE.

The wheel mounts to the hub with three screws rather then the six of the MOMO and Nardi wheels.

ATIWE appears to have been an early supplier to AMG and also Porsche.

Beginning to think that AMG issued the design and spec to several manufacturers ?

No doubt, mine had "Italo Volante" stamped on one of the spokes.

Hey Rich....

I'm "retired ? " but I end up working everyday... Utility Companies that I've been doing business with for thirty years won't stop calling....pays the bills !!!

Car is at the shop of John Walls in Milford.
John is the painter @ the Lewes Auto Mall and I think he worked at I.G. Burton's Merc store years ago.

He's got a great metal building behind his house with a full spray booth.
He'll paint mine at the Lewes Automall booth as it has a better ventilation system.

John is into old BMW M3's.... has one now that he experimented with wrapping the whole car in a flat gray vinyl..
He also does paint on racing motorcycles.

It's going to be trial and error on fitting the 911SC flares...one side at a time.

Maybe solved the front flares as I just purchased a set of front fenders from "Joef".

We're going to overlay the flare over my existing fender to pull it out about 2"+

See what happens when you get old and senile !!!!

You will be at the top of the list to see it....

Trying to find a Gen I bodykit...you wouldn't have one in a pile behind Richmond's ?

Negative RBYCC,
nothing like that here.
I have a couple 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastbacks here, but not any 124 Benz items.
You know I would help you if I did!

Have a set of fiberglass flared rear fender arches for the 64-65 Mustang SCCA cars....
Don't ask me why I have them
