Under $150 poor mans ;) sub install! In my 87 260E

This thing has more power than I need and it sounds just awesome even with just using the trunk as a box.

Amplifier: 300W Dual 150W RMS $55 @ walmart
Sub: 8" Infinity Infinity REF850W online $49 (running 150W RMS bridged)
Wiring: KnuKonceptz 8guage wiring kit $32
Total: $136

Here are the pics of course

An 8" Fits close to perfect. There is a small gap due to the rise in the panel that a 1/2 inch wooden spacer will clear up, but other than that it fits PERFECT. Install was not bad at all.

Had to pull the rear seats completely off, but it wasn't as bad as I expected -- push red tab + lift seat cushions -- three bolts and lift up = backrest off. Pretty easy.

What do you guys think?

Thanks. That is why I decided with the 8" after measuring the deck over a 10 or 12 because I knew it wasn't gonna look as clean. I am very happy with my decision.

My 12 fits just as well...unless you mean clean because it takes up less space....then you win haha, my free air 12 takes a bit of room...

Well of course it can be made clean...I just saw it as turning something that could be easy into something a lot more difficult with more potential for me to basically screw it up

Does it provide a good amount of bass? More than you expected? Does it rattle that deck?

Taking a second look at it im really thinking about doing this myself. Good stuff man

Looks great, but most important, how does it sound. Was it worth it, does it provide a lot or a little bass?

+1 i've been wanting to add a sub. I'm not looking to boom or anything just need to fill in more bass and id rather do it this way so i don't need to use a box... How does it sound??

Sounds pretty awesome. Like I said even with 150W RMS I don't even have the sub cranked up at all. There is a little vibration when the cover is down, so I will need to prop it up slightly, but other than that it sounds great. I'm not a "boom boom" guy either. I just wanted bass so I can relieve the bass from regular speakers and let them do the highs.

When I crank it high, its pretty crazy!

I am reading though that I should have got an "IB" type sub as they are designed for free air setups or something. Either way this sub sounds fine to me I should have no plans to change anything in the future. I would like to retain my hearing into my future years.

Nice job, considering doing the same thing in my car, but using a sealed box instead of infinite baffle like yours.

I have a 10" sub in an IB setup. You're definitely right- if you don't want to have to deal with the odd shape of the back deck, 8" is the way to go. I had to build a baffle and put my sub under the rear deck, rather than through it like you did.

But I agree with whoever's words you were reading: If you can find an 8" sub designed for IB, I think you'll be even happier. I have the Infinity Kappa Perfect 10vq, which comes with magnet inserts that change the sub so that you can run it IB, sealed, or ported/bandpass. If you use a sub that isn't designed for IB (strong suspension/etc), you're likely to burn it up pretty quickly.

Also another bit of advice is for you to go through and seal your trunk from the cabin as much as possible. IB operates on the principle that the front of the sub must be completely isolated from the back of the sub... otherwise the sound waves thrown off the back and front of the sub will cancel each other out to a certain degree.

But frankly, if you're happy with how it sounds now, eff it. I know all too well how much work (and money!!) going all out can be. If you're pleased, that's all you need!!

I wouldn't want to have the sound system cost more than what I paid for the car!

I'm going to head to Home Depot and buy some Carpet Padding and 3M spray adhesive for foam and line my entire trunk with it. I read you can buy this stuff (55ft^2) for like $25!
That's my project for today I'll post some pics once I get all the stuff.
thanks to here for idea:

Wouldn't that stuff deteriorate like the engine hood pad in a few years and cause a whole bunch of nastiness in the trunk? It IS a good idea though!

Nice job on the woofer install too! Personally, I'd rather get an Infinity Basslink. The newer ones aren't that huge and dont take up a lot of space.

Not sure...only one way to find out

This is only for sound proofing, not anti-vibration. I don't notice any or very little vibrations from these panels at all. I plan to buy some FatMat to take care of the vibrations.

The plastic cover...covers it all, so I'm not too worried about making it 100% perfect.

Here's what the PO did on our '91

BTW, the later cars have carpet liners which may be more sound deadening than the plastic liners.

I think I'll just buy like 50ft^2 of Matmat....that should cover the underside of the rear deck so the vibrations are reduced. Maybe I'll double layer it too.

Anybody know where I can find industrial grade aluminum foil?

--

I like that cutout for the sub. Very sweet. I might grab one at the junkyard and try to copy that design so I still got my original if I screw it up

Anybody got any pictures of the best way to do the trunk lid? I've noticed there is some rattles + vibrations from it...

Here's the new baffle. It sounds so much nicer without the vibrations. It was very easy to make...hardest part was the 45 degree angles on the ends as you can see in the pictures. Still need to bolt her down then seal it. Still got those 3 big gaping holes as you can see.

depending on how **** you get, you'll need to consider the gaps from the hinges and headrest mechanisms as well. I spent a ton of time working through those issues on my sub install.

In hindsight, probably not worth the trouble.
