Squeaking Climate Control

Love the '93 300D. So does my wife

When the climate control is turned on, there is a squeaking sound. Sounds almost as if the fan bearings need grease. The sound stops when the climate control is turned off.

Is this common?

This is mildly off-putting. Does anyone know if there is a logical fix that is not ruinously expensive that would be worth pursing?

Many thanks.

Caleb

Is it a squeak or a "click"?

Does it stop if you change from cold->warm or vice versa? Does it do it all the time?

Thanks ps2cho.

It is a squeak, not a click. It seems to happen no matter where the temperature dial is set (cold through hot). After it has been running for a while, the squeak at times seems to stop. There is a soft "clunk" sound that happens only one time when the car is started that seems to come from behind the dash.

Thanks,

Caleb

Try to pinpoint using some pipe where it is coming from.

what u need to is either change it but it is worthless to spend the money on, try just grease it, though that recuires some work, if u don't know how to do it might cost u something

Thanks. Yes, it squeaks on the lower setting, but not on high. I had thought of lubricating it, but have no idea how that would work without disassembling the dash. Sounds like maybe I should turn the radio on and not worry about it unless the fan dies. Thanks also for the link to the replacement part.

Poking around the internet, I saw that on earlier models the blower is accessible from the firewall after removing the windshield wiper. I wonder if these models are different?

I'm having the same issue. Hopefully it's accessible from the firewall.

I ordered a Haynes manual to find out. I'll let you know what it says. Thanks.

It's the blower. Mine was a piece of plastic debris that had come off something(?) and was slightly hitting the blades of the blower. I've had a friend try to lube his when his started doing, after finding that nothing was hitting the blades. Whatever it is, it is most likely being caused in that area.

It is accessible through the windshield wiper area. Do a search here or peachparts. Lots of writeup on how to get in the area. Do not go through the climate control unit and if that's what the Haynes manual says, return it.

Update...

The Haynes manual has the same procedure to get at the blower as the wiki linked above--under the wiper assembly.

Dove in tonight. Got the blower assembly out and lubricated the bearings with automatic transmission fluid. Reassembled all the bits and pieces and fired her up. No more squeaking--so far.
