Oil Sludge in Cooling System: 1988 300E

My cooling system is oozing with sludge. What would be a good flush? I hear warm water works the best...I want the best

I cleaned my expansion tank and it still looks ****ed. Should I just go ahead and get a new one?

sludge

Sounds like you have head gasket problems. I would check that before buying a new tank

Just drain, run it on tap water for a day, drain, repeat until it is clean. You need to figure out what the "sludge" is though.

Autoworks check out my blown head gasket thread...

Ok cool. Yeah some people say to do this and that and I've just been overwhelmed with ideas. Im pretty sure its oil. What other type of liquid could it be?

Transmission fluid if the radiator is toast...but nothing else. It is either engine oil or tranny fluid. You can always send it off to get it analyzed I believe (not that I have done it so no references).

yeah sounds like a head gasket issue, i just went through the same thing with mine, run water with like half a bottle of dawn dish soap mixed in, the dish soap will help break lose any oil throughout the cooling system. run it that way for a day or so, then drain and flush the system untill you dont see any soap bubbles running out. the oil is more then likely getting in from the head gasket tho =(

best of luck!

Ok will do. Yeah im in the process of repairing my head gasket. I took the head to a head shop and the radiator to a radiator shop both are good to go. Gonna cost $140 to get my head skimmed cleaned and checked. $120 for my radiator to be cleaned.

The estimate for the indie mechanic was $2500...Im doing everything for around $1000 that includes buying some new tools

lots of cars
Can't you just buy a used 88 300e for $2500? You'll get $250 from the junk yard.

Your missing the entire point.

The car has sentimental value. I got the car for a dollar and if I fix it I won't have to get another car and have a car payment. The W124 chassis is one of the best Mercedes ever. There are a lot of good parts on it.
