What trans will work in a 93 300E 2.8???

My mechanic has searched all of the local yards and has asked me if any of the following would be a direct replacement for my daughters car. a 94 or 95 400E, or a 93 300e 4matic. I have no idea, but when I warned her about buying this car I had no idea how right I was going to be. Even at Advanced auto we have learned that I cannot order parts for a 93 300E 2.8 because they will be wrong. Can anyone tell me what years and models will be a direct replacement for her car?

Thanks.

I think the stock tranny on the 2.8L edition is a 722.3. Im not sure about that. But i think you can use a 722.3, 722.4, or 722.5 tranny in it. The 722.5 is the 5 speed i believe so it would be more expensive, but it will work in the car and give it an extra gear.

There should be a thread about this because i think this is a kind of common problem. Although a broken transmission is not common at all. Get a k1 kit, which is new springs/pistons. This should fix it if not then idk what it is.
The kit is supposed to be a 2/3 upshift flare repair kit.

When my daughter got the car the trans would shift through 2nd ok, but once it tried to get to 3rd gear, it would just slip untill the shifter was put down into 2nd. It has 92K on it and judging from the burnt fluid when we drained the TC and changed the fluid & filter it was the original stuff. I looked at the parts available, K1 & K2 bands, seal kit, brake band... Do the symptoms tell me what I would need to replace? My mechanic has rubuilt these before, but says his eyes are too old now. I can help, and he has the right tools, but how difficult of a job is it?

I can't tell you for sure, because i havnt read much about transmission problems nor have i ever dealt with one. But my guess is it shouldn't be too hard.
Just because the guys eyes are bad doesn't mean that his brain is bad. Just let him know what the problem is, and im sure he can figure it out (if he has worked with enough of these trannys).

At the least he should be able to walk you through the steps of what to do.

But, if i were you, look for a thread about this, or contact one of the people on here who has had more experience with the W124's on this forum. I'm only 15 years old and have only been driving with my permit for 11 months, so i can't help you much =(.

Once again my guess is it can't be too hard as long as the MECHANIC knows what he is talking about.

SORRY

1993 300e 2.8 - M104 Engine, SOLD; S320 2000
when you need parts for a 300e 2.8, order parts for the 1994 e320 ....same exact engine just smaller displacement... yes, most car parts stores cannot get the parts right due to the model change in 1993....

Thanks for the advice. I did some reading last night and it almost seems like the 94-95 300e trans will fit. Does anyone know where I will find the numbers on the trans or is it built into the vin?

Sounds like you need the K1 spring kit to fix a 2-3 shift flair try that first, maybe someone has the 126 PN sitting around, its about 9$ from the dealer.

Maybe I am worng about the meaning of the 2-3 flair. My daughters will not stay in 3rd for more than 1 second at any time, and 4th is a bigger unknown. Has the K1 kit been known to fix a problem this severe?

Ahh yeah thats not a flair, that sounds like a hydraulic or vacuum problem. Flair is just when it takes a long time to shift, disengage, change gear, re-engage really sluggishly. If you're getting a transmission just get one from a 300E/E320 w124 car, the V8 has a different bell housing I believe. If you are near Atlanta, Ga take it to Blueridge MB, they will probably be able to diag it for you.

You may just want to take the pan off and see if there are chunks in it, that will tell you the most.

Your transmission is a 722.4 and the replacement would also need to be a 722.4. It is the small body version of the 722.3.

The K1 shift kit only resolves flaring, nothing more. I did not go any deeper than the B3 bands in mine, but if it is slipping and not shifting, the clutch bands are toast. The fact your fluid was burnt only reinforces that notion. If it was having trouble shifting across all gears, it could be anything, but since it is only 4th gear, I'd bet the clutches overheated and are done for.

The brake band goes around the K1 clutches. If you look up my transmission thread on this first page you'll see all the parts. I would make a logical suggestion and say expect to replace EVERYTHING. If one is burned, all are burned. You can buy a rebuild "kit" that comes with pretty much everything minus the disks themselves, I believe.
Sparing that, a swap would be the next best thing.

Thanks for the advice. I talked with my mechanic yesterday and we can pull one ourselves for $100. We are going to try a 93 400E that has a straight 6 in it first. At $100 we can afford to be wrong a time or two. The fit issue is all I am concerned about. When you see a car tht has the rear quarter demolished the tranny is usually pretty good. I learned a lot from listening to all of you. I will let you know how it turns out.

Check out my transmission thread as I took a ton of pictures so you'll go in there with some metal images in mind. It's really not bad at all.

Why a 93 400E with a 6cylinder?

Because that's what is available in a 93. Thee are older w124's with a 6, and a 93 300e w/4matic, but I thought I read a reply that said that one would not fit. So when choosing between the right DOHC engine / year, or the right model but the wrong year we chose the right engine for a match. Do you have more information that would help us make a better choice?
