Just bought a C124 coupe
Just took this home tonight

Awesome car, drives well, looks good, and has the good old M104 howl. Has some Brabus fettling - its apparently a 3.7, but I doubt it having owned a C36 - it doesnt feel as punchy, and AFAIK Brabus never made a 3.7, only a 3.6-24v, so am pretty sure its a 320CE with a Brabus B6 tuning kit - cam, control module etc, good for about 20bhp.
Does have a few niggles though - nothing too bad for a 17 year old car, but just trying to get idea of cost and work involved - new to 124s, have only owned a 201 and a couple of 202s in the past and want to get it all sorted and perfect!
Seems to have a bad flex disc - bit of a thump on throttle off sometimes.
Rear window demister not working (light goes on, but nothing happens)
Passenger seat tilts back, but not forward.
Possibly a slight vacuum leak, or throttle actuator needs cleaning, idle slightly lumpy sometimes, and has stalled in reverse.
If anyone is able to help, much appreciated!

Beautiful coupe! Congrats on the purchase. As far as the seat functionality, I can say with 100% certainty that the problem is a dirty/corroded switch. Look up tutorials on this forum for cleaning them out. It's a fairly simple fix.

Plenty of newer AMGs and other high end euros kicking around too - apparently the 2nd highest Ferrari ownership per capita.
Definitely not a slow car though!
I am becoming more convinced its the AMG M104 with some form of Brabus trickery added later - has the trademark diesel noise, and sounds a lot more like my long stroke C36 than my old C280 did (havent owned a 320 before to compare however)

An E36 is just a stroked 280 motor, so if you take the plugs out and manually turn the engine with something though the plug hole to go through TDC and BDC you'll easily be able to tell it's capacity.

I'm almost 100% convinced its a 3.2 now for one simple reason - it has the 5 speed 722.5 trans, which I am pretty sure would explode from the torque of a proper 3.6+ motor...

The C36 was never originally offered with the 5 speed for that reason, for the first years of production it used the 722.3 box, and in 1997 swapped to the 722.6, none of the V8s AFAIK used the 722.5 either..

But you think Mercedes has built a mass production car, known for it's outstanding reliability, and that with 85 more newtons the gearbox would give out? (320 Vs E36)
I mean, sure, maybe the 722.5 would have a high rate of failure if driven really hard in hot environments when coupled with an E36 motor but I really don't think that means any E320 with a 36 motor would have it's gearbox let out.
Why don't you try the idea I gave you with measuring the stroke of the engine?
I am sure any mechanic can easily and cheaply do it

Yeah, I am taking it to get a few niggles ironed out, so will give it shot - but there was a good reason that AMG stuck with the 722.3 trans for the 3.6 motors!
