Question Brake problem caused by ABS ?

I got a weird problem with the brakes. Brakes have been working fine until yesterday except for the ABS.

But now both front wheel brake leaves on, not always but sometimes. Could this be caused by a failing ABS or other failing electronics?
The condition of brake pars checked and seems to be okay.

I would understand the one wheals brakes should leave on but always both and at same time?. And then I have to stop the car and wait or try to reverse I helps sometimes.

The ABS lamp lighting every ~15 minutes, and the rmp meter dies at the same time.
It usually takes 5-60 seconds and then it works again. (But this problem have been last 2000 miles so I don’t now if it is a other problem)

Or could someone tell me how to temporary disable ABS to find out
if it is causing the problem.

The car is a 300D-88 with ABS

If the tach is failing at the same time, the fuse might be defective or loose. I don't know if the ABS control and the tach are on the same circuit, so check your fuse directory in the fuse box. Sometimes the ABS lamp comes on when the system is under voltage. If the fuse is good, check the battery voltage and the alternator.

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean by "leaves on" Do you mean the front brakes do not disengage or let go when you take your foot off the brake pedal?

Brakes do not disengage...

Can’t say for sure when the problem I coming but after driving a few miles I start feeling (smelling) that the brakes are I use.

But i think that brakes do not disengage fully when I take my foot off the brake pedal.

Changed to new discs yesterday. (Only 9 mm left of the old, after the problem)

Problem continues...

When brakes do not release after removing the foot from the brake pedal the problem is usually bad brake hoses. These are the flexible rubber hoses at each wheel. Over time, the interior wall of the hose deteriorates and acts as a one-way valve -- it lets fluid through under heavy pressure, but won't let fluid flow backward when pressure is released. This is a common problem. Given that your car is 15 years old and, I assume, the brake hoses are original, this is a likely scenario. I hope you maintain the brake fluid by replacing it every two years. If not, I'm guessing this may be a contributing factor to hose decay.

Are you sure the pads needed changing? For my car the pads are specified 11 mm new, 2mm discard. With 9 mm the pad is nearly new.

I have the same problem but on my rears...it just occured this morning...smell is very strong...I was told my master cylinder was bad ...seals are swollen because the previous owner at one point accidentally put steering fluid in the brake fluid reservoir...(as I found out today ) Could that be the reason for me as well? Sometimes when at a light and in D, letting go of the brake, the car doesn't roll, when I shift down to 2nd, it works ok...thought brakes were problem....what do you guys think? Sorry if I am hijacking the thread...

Zorro, I've had personal experience with brake fluid contaminated by another fluid. And yes, this will tend to lock up the brakes. This is probably the case with your problem. The only fix is to flush out the old fluid, then replace all the seals affected by either rebuilding or replacing the units (master cylinder, caliper). I'm not familiar with the ABS units and whether thay may be affected.

Tip: One way to check for contaminated brake fluid is to take a sample and put it in a bucket of water. Brake fluid will dissolve in water... the contaminants will not.
