Please, genuine help with w124 coilovers.
Alrighty guys,
I am Jordan from Australia, just letting you all know, have browsed on this site for years whenever I have needed a hand with something w124 related.
But right now, I am setting up a coilover conversion for one of my best mates and need definitive answers as to what will, and what won't work.
It seems to me that everybody has had different experiences with the deletion of the SLS system, but for the most part things seems to work out well.
Now, I have read through the entire 11 page article regarding coilovers about 4 times now, but can't seem to come to a conclusion as to whether or not E36 coilovers will work straight out of the box or not?
I have also been told, that E37 (E36 Z3) coilovers fit perfectly front and rear, but only the one person has said that, and I am not willing to tell him he will get a product that fits, only to find out that it infact doesn't.
So, is there anything I can buy directly?
Thanks in advance,
Jordan.

I believe the thread you are talking about...the main player put his car up for sale a month or so after arguing how great coilovers were going to work. Sounded to me like Amaan(?) was not as happy with the results as he hoped.

1990 300ce supercharged and intercooled
The E36 coil overs are not direct bolt on. THey can be modified to work. I have a upper mount at my shop right now that I was using to compare. Also the upper eye for the strut to bolt to the spindle has to be reamed out. The rear shocks are too long and not coil over anyways.
The only direct bolt setup that I would spend any money on would be the Ground Control system. It is made for the 190 chassis but the parts are all interchangeable. The only thing I do not like about their setup is that to get the camber and caster adjustment the way they want the mount is very low pushing the lower spring perch pretty low. This makes fitting larger wheels and tires very difficult. If you were doing a 500e then it would not be a problem because you could have the offset to keep the wheels outboard far enough.
If you are just trying to get a good drop on the car then put the w129 upper strut mount up front and stock front struts with some drop springs. The rear I just did this on mine was use the saab 900 rear shocks. You have to cut some off the lower mount to fit but pretty easy.

It comes down to purpose. Why coil overs instead of a quality strut and spring?
The wagon sls conversion is a completely separate topic, again the direction you go depends on purpose.
Just asking as you want a definitive answer in a custom setup, how open minded are you?

Did we identify any long term satisfied user of coilovers? If we have, I have missed it.
Maybe JustinWrocks?
(But there are plenty of satisfied users of SLS delete without coilovers)
