help: Gear box problem
i bought recently a w124.031 300e 1991.
i noticed this which didn't notice during the test drive.
those cars as far as i understood launch using 2nd gear, when the car is cild the gear change goes smooth after a while 10-15 min of driving the engine rev goes higher and you feel like it need a bit of time to change to 3rd gear then when the 3rd gear engaged it shift directly to the 4th.
3rd hear is working well on kick-down or when i go from "D" to "3". i am facing this problem only on "D" mode, and to be honest i am losing the power of the car when i am climbing a hill or something like.
any one have a previous experience in this.
You might also want to try moving the gear switch in your console from E to S, or vice versa, and observe the behaviour that ensues. E is Economy, and it will take off in 2nd always, unless you floor the gas pedal. S is Standard, and will take off in 2nd only if you press lightly.
Let us know how you go.

unfortunately i have no idea about the history i bought the car one month ago, it was parked for nearly 4 years. what i know for sure is that it had a manual gearbox originally.
i thought about changing the trans oil and the filter but a lot of people advice me not to.
any ideas
If that is correct, how do you know the correct automatic transmission module was installed, let alone matched the cars drive train.
If the car did sit for four years, forget what others have said change the fluid and filter.
Then drive the car in the mode that lets you start off in 1st gear and run locally and on the highways for a couple of weeks while the transmission learns your driving/shift patters!!
the thing is that after i checked its vin i discovered that it was ordered as manual. it was converted to auto in a certain point.
it's owner left the country 4 years ago, and finally he decided to sell it.
i will take your advice and change the oil and the filter and will see how it goes.
the thing is that i reed a lot of articles where people changed the fluid and filter but it got worst, i will give it a try anyhow
After about 10km drive I stopped at Zebra Crossing with car still running in "D" and my leg on brake; as I wanted to continue my movement the car refused to move, I put it in "P", switched off the engine, restarted the car put it on R, N, & D but no any kind of reaction again, I put it back in P and heard a noise that sounded like weak inflated air bag 'fuzfuz', I moved the lever to D, returned it to P and heard a different hard noise like loose joint or iron touch, but the car refused to engage in any gear.
The car starts fine, revs well, but the gears cannot now engage again. I checked the ATF it was as I have been using it which was said to be normal but I decided to add more, but to no effect either.
A local mech. towed it to safety, opened the gear box from under, checked and said that the 2 'Joindis'? rubbers were not cut and that it may be the Valve Body. He was not sure.
Please help.
