noise when i engage heating and cooling

For the past little while, when i turn on the heating i hear a scratching noise like a wheel turning from behind the vents. I'm wondering where this noise is coming from. Is it possible something is wearing out, or bearings. Suggestions are welcomed. When i turn off the heating, the noise stops.

The scratching sound could be a damper moving. If you hear the noise (sounds like a buzz) behind the pass. side vent, that is the aspirator motor for the cabin temp. sensor. It draws air past the sensor (in the roof rail near the lights) to get a better feeling of the temp. inside the car.

sounds more like a wheel turning

no it sounds more like a wheel turning. only happens when i engage the defogger or heating. high, low and auto settings. i hear it from inside the car, and not from under the hood.

okay, i just went through the same problems with my car and had my mechanic check it out. He is an indep factory trained Merc guy and he sat in it turned it on and told me immediately that the sound is "normal" for that car. the same sound like a ticking or alomost like if you had a house fan running and you put an edge of paper in the blade of the fan..that noise. i was told that this is completely normal for E300/E320 cars. I hope that helps because i was convinced it was a belt or something

Depending on your vehicle, you may benefit from having the anti-gurgle kit ( I am not making this up ) installed. I can't remember exactly which years benefit from this change..., you may want to check with your local shop.

You guys have the same problem!? My family has had our 300D Turbo for the past 17 years, and just this year this gurgling problem started. My very competant MB Service Advisor says that it is probably air in the heating/cooling system. I have no idea how it got there, but I find it quite annoying. How do we get rid of the problem? I don' t think he was aware of this anti gurgle kit, because he never mentioned it. Any ideas? Is this available from MB?

(It is caused by ) a small amount of air trapped in the heater core causing an annoying noise as the heater (mono) valve opens. Since the condition is not a safety concern it is not a "Recall Campaign" and Mercedes-Benz is not required to make these modifications after the warranty has expired.

If the noise persists you might consider installing the gurgle kit yourself, its not very complicated. E-Mail Mercedes-Benz at cac@mercedes-benz.com requesting work instructions group 83, #245, 08/90. it includes the parts list. If you don't want to do this repair * your self the dealer should charge only about 1.5 hrs.
This is what I remembered, I got this from www.mercedesmailinglist.com (one of the original online MB discussion groups). It is probably quite old, but the kit still applies.
