Fan Squeaking

I have a small intermittent squeaking from my fan too. I was told that it is the bearings in the fan motor. They told me that although lubrication could temporarily help the problem, I really need to just replace the fan. I was also told that he problem with either remedy is that the fan is buried in the dash, so it is going to be expensive to get to it. I hope it isn’t as bad as getting to the infamous evaporator. If it is, I may just replace both parts, even if the evaporator isn’t faulty. I don’t want to pay them to go into my dash twice, and in general I don’t like thinking about them tearing apart my car.

When it starts to squeak a little, I just run the fan on high speed to get it to stop. After the squeaking stops, I can go back to slower fan speeds and the squeaking is gone or greatly reduced. I also notice that the squeak changes slightly upon breaking hard or when there are other sudden changes in the forces being applied to the entire car. Like you, I only notice the little squeak when the stereo isn’t playing. I suppose that sooner or later the squeaking will get much louder and constant, so I will have to get it fixed, but it has already been a few years with no change for the worse.

You are all in luck (and so am I) because the fan is accessed through the fresh air grille under the windshield. You don't have to remove the dash. The windshield moldings and FA grille must be removed, as well as the wiper assembly. Not an easy task, but definitely nowhere near as awful as replacing the evaporator!

Same problem!

This same problem started on my 300CE! At first it was tolerable and would only squeak if I hit a bump or hit the brakes hard, but now it's pretty consistent and annoying so the fan bearings must be deteriorating pretty quick (it's been 2 months since I noticed the first squeak).

I'm semi-handy but definitely would not be able to do this without guidance... any tips or DIYs on how to get this done?

Also, what's the part / part number that needs to be replaced?

hmmm... ok did a bunch of digging and figure that I need to get through the fresh air grille which apparently needs the wiper and other things removed.

would appreciate if anyone could help with some links on how to get this done?

Thanks!!
