OIL Drain plug

Hey all I am back with another question. I am doing to first oil change on my E 320 and I found the plug is pretty striped. I have already ordered a new one because there is no way I would reuse this one. Now how in the world can I get this thing out. Its VERY tight and some ends are rounded and some are not.

Thanks for the help!

if you can still get a wrench or socket on it use one that is six-sided, and fits over the head nice and tight. a shot of wd40 on the bolt would be a good idea too, if you can't get enough leverage to turn it try an impact wrench, or a cheater pipe over your breakover bar. or hit the wrench with a rubber hammer. (make sure it don't fly off) if it's too rounded to get a wrench on anymore, i would put the vice grips on it super tight, as tight as you can get them, and hit it loose with a rubber hammer. make sure youre going counterclockwise

Oil Plug

Sure it's more stripped then it is tight. Make sure once you do remove it that you replace the copper washer with a new one and dont torque the plug more then 26ft lbs.

Yeah I don't know who cinched it down so tight. The car has a extensive service history from Mercedes and its a 95 with only 92,xxx but I hate running into things like this.

Thanks all for the help!

I got it. I tried the Vice grips and it didn't work. I then went old school Chevy mechanic and used a pipe wrench ( This worked many times when I work on Camaros) and it didn't work so I got out the sears tool for striped bolt heads and It didn't work with the socket wrench turning it. I got mad got out the Inpact gun and hit it with it and boom it came out quick and easy. YOU NEED THIS TOOL!

You may want to consider a 'Fumoto' drain plug for easy oil changes...they sell here in the states also.

The link didn't work....is it anything like the fram quick change one. I got a standard plug from Autohausaz.com for less than two dollars but the fear of how bad that plug was rounded got me. Autohausaz I will say was a fast shipper and good to deal with.

Thanks

Oil plug

Brian!!!! As long as your using the right socket to take the oil plug out and your using the right torque to replace it, the plug will last a life time. Just remember you need a 13 MM socket and replace the copper washer everytime you change your oil. Also do not tighten the plug over 26foot lbs.

Yeah good tips. The E 320 I puchased had an extensive service history with MB. I was very suprised when I went to change the oil and found a drain plug so messed up. I can't say for sure a dealership had done it but according to the service records it must have been. That is why I do all I can on my own, with the help of you guys on this car.

Thanks to all
Brian

Hmmm...link worked for me....try searching some more (google, etc)....several US places sell them....its a neat little spigot thing....an Audi bud turned me on to them...about $20; no tools needed to drop the oil.

...or just be careful with your new , regular plug ...nothing wrong with the old fashioned way of doin' it either.
