Hi Forum,

Urgently looking for advice !!

I have owned a 93 200E here in Ireland for 2 years now,
recently the car has developed an idling problem.
-cold starting is difficult and once started, the car runs very rough, idles very low and can cut out altogether - until warmed up.

After doing some research on this forum, and others I -
- changed the oil / filter
- changed the plugs (original mercedes bosch)
- cleaned the throttle plate
these only made a slight improvement...

I took it to a local independent mercedes specialist here in Dublin.
( there are only two here !! - so my choice was limited) He says it will cost up to and above 1000 euro (1300 USD) to ge the car running properly again. He says a problem like this can be very hard to pinpoint, and you have to work your way through new parts until you get it.

I was shocked by this as, the car is very drivable apart from this issue.
Do you think he may be trying to screw me for parts I don't need ?

Don't get me wrong - I have no problem spending the cash, if I know it will be good for the car, But i am reluctant to go down this route, when at the end of it, the problem may still remain, but with me a lot poorer - ( you need every penny to pay for fuel over here )

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That's BS. Throwing parts at the problem is no way to solve it. Any good tech will be able to find the source(s) of the fault and spend as little $$$ as possible.

If cold starting is difficult, you will want to check the cold start valve. Problems with idling until the engine is warm may be caused by the warm-up regulator.

A couple of thoughts...

The egr valve may not be closing properly due to deposits on the valve seat.

Your car may be affected by the dreaded engine wiring harness problem that plagued many models built between 93 and 95.

Your mechanic is going to take the "back yard mechanic" approach by replacing eveything until the problem is fixed.

FIND ANOTHER MECHANIC.

Here is my suggestion....
1. Change the OVP (easy 1 min job)
2. Change your wiring harness (tougher job, but can be done by an ave "joe")
3. Do a tune up - spark plugs, wires, change all your filters, change all your fuses, etc.
4. If that doesn't fix your problem, then go to the dealers.

GL.

I kind of have a similar problem that I have noticed recently on my car. While my car is idling in drive, I noticed that it idles very low at 500-600. This doesnt seem to be normal since I believe the normal idle should be around 800-1000...any suggestions?

Normal idle speed for a warmed up M103 engine is around 600-700 rpm. My car only idles at 1000 RPM right after start up on cold mornings. Once warm the idle drops to about 650 and runs very smooth.
