Important window tinting poll

last summer, in one of the many tinting threads, there was talk of how important it is to have the rubber strips that rub against the glass lined with moleskin, or some other soft material to prevent the tinting from getting scratched. supposedly the material MB uses causes scratching on the tint. well, i'm about to get my windows tinted, but i feel like being lazy, and ignoring good advice. i wondering who has added this protection, and those who have not - is your tint scratched? seems like it has more to do with dirt getting caught on the rubber, than the actual material being used.

thoughts?

Dude, make sure that you do get the moleskin (or whatever). My tint shop did NOT install it and both front windows are scratched.

I never installed the felt strip and had very faint, little vertical scratches on my tint from rolling the windows up and down. If I do it again on the next Benz, I would spend the extra cash (or do it yourself) and get it done. On mine I barely noticed it but it was there, enough to make me want to install the felt strip. I guess it will be up to you in the end if you are a person that pays attention to detail.

Good luck!

to get these felt strips in - do they need to take the door panels off? would they need to anyways to do the tint job? i'd like to avoid non-mb mechanics mucking around with the panel, since the it leads to rattles and busted plastic clips. i don't know what's worse - scratches or a rattling door! i guess i should make some calls.

That's not a very practical statement if you live in Florida. If you value your interior and live in Florida, you need to tint your windows. Don't forget that Mercedes is forced to use biodegradable plastics in their cars due to government regulations in Germany. I can already tell the difference in plastic/vinyl that's in my 126 SEC vs what's in my 210 E55. I have more cracks in the dash of my E55 than I do in my SEC that's 13 years older.

buttttt

each country has their own rules and regulations, hence the benzes that are built for the US don't neccassarely use the same material as in Germany. Also a lot of benzes are build in the US as well.

4 wheeled car.
tint zone in Rowland Heights will tint your windows for $140 front and back and charge an extra $100 ($25 per doors) to take the doors aparts, install the moleskin/felt skin on the gasket thingy and put it all back together

Before I used to just slice the rubber gasket but even then, it scratched my dad's and sister's windows.

I just had my car tinted yesterday. The invoice says they put felt tip on it but I couldn't tell if anything is different. Couldn't roll the window down for 3 days anyway.

The shop used metallic film from Solargard and looks sweet with lifetime warranty. And no it did not interfere with my AM/FM/GPS/smart key reception.

I know whatcha mean. Personally, I can't drive a car without tint. First of all it's too hot in the summer and second, I love my privacy.

i spoke to a guy at a shop and i was asking him about these life time warranties, etc. He was a cool kid and was being frank, so he told me that most of the tint shops close down and a new owner reopens at the same exact place within a year hence our life time warrenty cannot be honored since that shop doesn't exist even though only the name has changed!!!

Exactly my concern. That's why I paid a little more and had mine done at a reputable shop that's been around for a while. They do special graphic tinting for those lowrider competitions. Pretty cool stuff.

BTW, if you go with a shop that uses FormulaOne films, their warranty is honored by all FormulaOne authorized shops across the US. of course they cost more, but you get what you pay for.

Wink Some people...

Hey, Jimmy.

Some folks chime in just to get another post so they can move up a rank or two. I think you handled the response very well -- thought you were a moderator for a moment.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Tint

Checking with local Solargaurd Tilt dealer...one thing I wasn't entirely sure about was their insistance that they would need apply the rear glass tilt in 4-5 pieces leaving seams - they assured me they would be small.

Is this consistent or are these guys hacks??

Thanks - 5-Salt

Not a moderator but a serious car buff and I can't tell you how many good people I have met through this site. I just get a little offended when people just come in here to bash other people and their threads when seriously, we are here to help each other out. I wasn't trying to sound like an a$$h--- to the guy but only to offer some friendly advice.

I have sold my Benz and only have my classic fixer Benz left. I hopefully plan to get into a W211 E55 in the next year or so. If I can ever help you guys out on anything please don't hesitate to ask. I might not respond right away because I travel for a living and have very limited time but I'll do my best.

Take care and have fun!

- JDG
