Mobil1 0W-40 (best) or any other 229.5-approved synthetic. See list:

Also, 15W-40 meets the same spec. The other grades like 10W-40, 5W-30 do not. You can get 15W-40 in the 5 qt. container at Wal-Mart for $23 or $24 dollars.

I'm sure 15W-40 is fine for California, but it may be way too thick for the o.p. in NJ in cold temps.

Use the correct Oil. You can get the exact Mobile one that the dealers use,
229.5-approved synthetic, at Kragens for $$4.99 a qt. This is the Euro formual, (says MB right on the specs)

That's a good deal. But there are many other oils that meet the 229.5 spec.

Yes there are, but I did not know Kragens had it, and a good price.

Elemnt, 229.5 is a MBZ spec. For more info go here.

The 97 did not have a spec for synthetic oil. I would use AMSOil over Mobile 1. I would not go with a 0W oil in an older car becuase you may find leaks that you did not know you had before. Use the same weight as you do now like 10W-30.
