Any interest in oil change post?
I'm coming up on my next oil change and given the responses to my pictorial brake job post (https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w210/107227-okay-brake-job.html) I was curious to check the level of interest in a similar post regarding an oil and filter change (including pointing out those pesky o-rings!). It would be a little more detailed because it would be by the drain process, not topsider and I'd try to keep it as basic as possible.
Let me know and -- as always -- enjoy the ride
This forum is great. Since I joined 2 months ago, I have already save $300 on DIY Brake job.
Greg, I will let you use my car for the demonstration! (Maybe I will even go in 1/2 on the oil and filter as well.)
Looking forward to the post.
) behind, drive on out to the left coast, and we'll do it. Heck, I've even got an extra oil-filter wrench you can take home with you. But you have to buy the oil and fleece filter kit yourself. I'll throw in a gasket/crush washer, though.

Thanks for the laughs and feedback, folks. I'll try to get it up by mid-month, but I've got a few other projects pressing for attention. How about a pictorial post on a steering wheel swap? Yummmm...
Enjoy the weekend!
Greg

But yeah, I guess a more detailed one would be better than my "fast paced" one..

oh yeah, I think it should be 0w-40..but I always thought of that as being too thin...been using 5w-30 and it's running great

I made that 5w30 mistake on my first oil change (although mine was 10W30); however, even Mobil1 recognizes it doesn't meet the MBZ spec. The only one I can guarantee you meets the MBZ spec -- because I've got a bottle of it in front of me, is the 0W-40, it says it meets MB spec 229.5.
Anecdotally I've heard that the difference in Mobil1 is not just viscosity, but that there are actually some differences in additives to meet the specific MBZ specs. There are in fact other manufacturers who have lower-vis oils that meet the MBZ spec, so there may be some truth to such tales. At any rate, regardless of the weight, for my money the only thing going in my engine is what meets MBZ specs, and in Mobil1 that's the 0W-40.
Finally, if you're worried about how thin it seems, don't be; as a multi-vis oil the 0W has given way to the 40 long before the oil reaches operating temperature.
Take care and enjoy the oil-spec ride,

Greg
With 5W/30 oil do you see any leakage on your car? I review many site on web and found that 0W/40 is not good for 97, but 5w/30 may be ok.
On last oil change, dealer in Santa Barbara use 10W/40 on my car.

I will have to relook in my manual...since Hadam has said that '97 cars don't go well with 0w40? hmm...could it be that the 4.3L and the 4.2L use different weights?
maybe we should research some more.
oh yeah, and the answer is no as for my car leaking oil.
The owner's manual should have the actual spec and you can compare that to Mobil1's website as they list which of their oils meet what spec.
Take care,
Greg
