That is a purge valve and yes it ticks or pulses not all the time only when needed and during a obd 2 self test.It is used to vent the excess vapors ect. in the fuel system.

this is what i was told by the MB dealer.
but my car makes the ticking noise constantly.
it makes the noise at the same pace all the time, especially when the car is on but in park.

its just getting worn and it works in a louder state, get a new one and you shouldn't be able to hear it. depending on the mileage of your car it may be leaking vacuum too... check it out
