WTB: Used or Rebuilt Transmission for 97 E420
Took my car to the dealership today and they said I need a new tranny. Anybody know where I can get a used one or rebuild mine? I definitely can't afford to get a new one and it is not worth it either. Thanks.

I was researching in this forum and was hoping it is the transmission fluid or the transmission control unit. My transmission is liking slipping from 3rd to 4th gear. Around 40mph, there is a weird noise, rpm starts to rev higher, and the car's temperature starts to rise. I brought it to an independent dealer a few days ago and then to the mercedes dealer this morning and they both said I need a new transmission. I only have 87K miles.

This scares me because my 96 just passed 80k. I always wondered why mercedes gave you a plaque and a certificate when your car passes 150,000 miles. now i know.

At least the 96 has the 4 speed transmission. In 97 the 5 speed was put in with mixed results. The 4 speed costs half as much and probably lasts twice as long.

$1,800 is mad cheap. Where do you live and ofcourse where did you get it done? I am getting quotes for like $3k so far. Dealer wants like $6k. I think I read somewhere that somebody brought a used tranny for $800. Can somebody point me to the right location. Thanks.

it is a mechanic all my customers have recommended me to so i am guessing the replacement is new? at first he quoted me at 15hundred but now 18hundred so as long as it is under 2k i'm in ok condition. i live in kansas the place is called autohouse stuggart, his specialty is porsches but also works on benzes. looks like i have found a good mechanic or at least i hope next week i will find out when i get my car back.
