MAF Mass Air Flow Help!

Sorry for double posting (Tech Talk) just want to get this fixed fast especially from some W210 owners with experience.

Got the following codes this weekend:
P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1) ) check vaccum leaks first or
faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor
P0173 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 2) )

Leading to believe it's a MAF problem. I have been reading threads all day but still have a few questions:

Will the MAF sensor cause rough idle?
Where is it located?
What kind of labor is needed to replace it?
Can it be fixed or should it be replaced?
What happens if you don't replace the unit?
Who has the best price on a new unit?

Thanks

Will the MAF sensor cause rough idle?
Yes, it can.
Where is it located?
It is attached to the air filter housing. Sits inline between air filter housing and intake pipe. Unplug the connector and you should have it in your hand.
I'd say it's more in the front 1/3 of the passenger side of the motor rather than near the firewall.

What kind of labor is needed to replace it?
5 mins. If you can undo a couple of clips, and one band clamp with a screw driver.

Can it be fixed or should it be replaced?
Yes, it's a wear item.

What happens if you don't replace the unit?
Bad mileage, lumpy idle, check engine lights

Who has the best price on a new unit?
I ordered one last week at drivewire.com for 184 (plus tx since I'm in Ca) I did not find anything less.. about 200 shipped to me.

Good luck,

-travis

speedmbparts.com has it for $161. Make sure you get the one for the V8 engine, not the V6. Part number ends in 113 instead of 112.

I also see them on ebay for the same price if you get lucky (nobody else bids on it).

Should be the same procedure as outlined above. Same engine.

Don't pay 700.00! Use the links above to purchase the Bosch part and save yourself a bunch of $$$.

If you have a Check Engine light on, go to Autozone and they'll clear it for free after you install the MAF.

No, No, No!

Far too excessive cost for a trivial procedure - as noted above a couple of clips and one clamp.

I could buy the part, fly to Phoenix, do the job, charge you less (only a little tho ...) and come home with some cash.

I had the same codes on my 96 E320. Rough idle, fluctuating 300-400 rpm, hesitation on acceleration. I tried to go the cheap way and bought an air flow sensor on line ($120) and installed it myself. It is very easy to do. Takes about 15 minutes. It has one electrical plug and a couple of hose clamps and is located between the air filter and the engine air intake on the left side of the engine compartment of my inline 6 cylinder.

However this did not solve the problem. I ended up taking it to the dealer who first replaced an O2 sensor ($400). The check engine light came on again and still ran rough after I left the dealer. When I took it back they replaced the mass air flow sensor with a MB part and that fixed the problem (for another $400+).

Beware too that even if you replace the sensor yourself with a genuine MB part, the adaptation data in the computer may need to be reset by someone who has the equipment and know how. The folks who sell these cheap air flow sensors don't tell you that.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

$700 is just laughable. That dealer is insane, but I bet a number of people get rooked on a regular basis because they don't research it.

I almost did. I just paid orver 500 to fix an A/C leak. The next morning the check Engine light was on. Took it in and they said the MAF was bad. Wanted 750.00 to fix but knocked a few bucks off because I have been a loyal customer.....unreal

how would one know the MAF needs to be replaced, short of rough idle and the engine codes listed in the first post?

I got a Solus Handheld CPU in my schools auto shop that clears the codes....if you drop by with your car during my class I can read / clear codes for you ( If you live in or near Valencia, CA) But hey, just take your car down to autozone or something....it's worth to see what codes your car has thrown
