My 2000 E430 is at the dealer now for the same problem. I have had it back five times for this. It went in the shop last November. It was determined that the brake booster was bad. It was replaced but the new one was an updated part. The new booster also had a different actuator rod as well. The light came back on a few days later. It was detemined that the new rod was not adjusted properly. Well, a few days later-- you guessed it, I was back again. This time it was brake fluid that had gotten on an electrical connector and was sending false signals out to the computer. Again I was on my way. As promised I was back again and the dealer replaced the brake lamp switch. Again I went back for the BAS/ESP light. Another faulty brake booster! Again I was out the door. It came on again! The dealer is not charging me of course and is even offering a loaner car. I am now waiting for the news today to see what it is this time. I will keep everyone posted.

E-Klasse,

Do I need to remove the cover under the Driver's dash? Or is this Brake Light Switch near the Brake Pedal? Do you have a diagram or picture of this part?

Thanks

RMT & Chuck,
Please DO a search for brake light switch there are threads that discussed this issue.
Yeah, U will have to remove the panel under the steering shaft, U can't see the switch without removing this piece...
I know your next question will be, How do U remove the panel? right???
Directions are in the threads too....

BTW, If you have messed with the brake light wires, then you might want to check the fuse....The fuse on my '96 is located on the left side of the dash next to the driver's side. If you've blown the fuse, U are likely to get the ABS/BAS error and no traction and NO brake lights... That's what happened to me.. I messed with the brake light cables and blew the fuse. I replaced the fuse and the error lights are gone...well I found this out, after I've changed the "brake light switch" and still getting the error.....

4 wheeled car.
turn the car on. Turn the steering wheel all the way over to the left. Bring it then back all over to the right, then center it back. turn car off. turn car back on, and ta-da no miore BAS/ABS warning. That only happened to me when they were installing some stereo stuff in the car. I called 1800mercedes and that's what they told me to do and it worked. weird!

I got mine back from the dealer on Tuesday. They looked over the entire electrical system and checked all codes and cleared them. The codes said I had a brake booster going out. This would have been the third one. A vacuum check was done and the booster was good. The repair was done in November 05. They called MB and were told to do something from a TSB. There is an adjustment that needs to be done to the brake light switch. It is some sort of a travel adjustment. If not done in a certain sequence it will set codes. The switch was replaced during the original repair. I really dont understand it what exactly what was done but I didnt ask many questions because I was not charged. My service advisor seems to think it is something different. He used to turn wrenches in the shop. There is a black contol box in front of the ESP module on the brakes. It is bolted directly on the ESP housing. It is what sends out codes. He seems to think it is defective. If so this is a eight hundred dollar item. I guess time will tell. I seem to be back about every three to four weeks. I will keep all posted.

BAS/ASR light on

Yes, it is the brake light switch. I cured mine for £8.78.

My Dealer, MB of walton on Thames, Surrey, UK supplied me with Part No. MA001 545 01 09 Stoplight Switch which I popped in by removing the panel under the dash and replacing the old one.

Cured the problem.

Beware, there is also Part No. MA001 545 64 09 on facelifted models from about July 1999.

My proble was resolves for under £10!!

I agree with The Godfather - should try resetting the computer as the first course of remedial action. If the problem presists, then look into replacing the switch - if this is the case, it is likely that the warnings will re-appear once you restart the engine after resetting the computer.

I had the same problem once, diagnosed as the switch by DAS but upon the suggestion of my mechanic, had my computer reset via DAS. Fixed the problem and never re-occured in the past 3 years.

yeah some earlier model 208 and 210s needed stop lamp switch replacement and shims to get rid of the problem, stupid design, newer models you just slap the stop lamp switch in and go............. normalizing the steering wheel (turning from lock to lock) will only get rid of those lights if the battery was disconnected, or the steering angle sensor lost power for some reason.

BAS/ARS light problems - HELP!!!

Hi everybody,
i got a 1998 Mercedes E300TD and the BAS/ASR light keeps turning ON. In the center of the Dashboard, only the BAS is displayed. I have read on other forums that the brake light switch might be the problem or the voltage on the battery is low. That's not the case with my car. The BAS light only comes on when the outside temperature is below -1 degrees celsius and after a 5 minute drive. Even when it's extremely cold and i restart the car, the BAS light still comes on. I also noted that the engine's output performance is limited. When it's warm outside, the BAS never comes on. Please help me out guys.
