There must be more to the story than whats here. This is quite unusual and for MB to turn their back or so he says on a problem like this when the car while out of warranty is still not that far out. I'd certainly like to see the service records and the like before I form an opinion. Takes a lot to put a hole in a block like severe overheat, running out of oil or lack of maintainence. Yes, its possible that there was a fault internally in the engine but the fact that MB does not want to do anything leads me to believe that there is lots more to this story. I have had 5 MB's since 1998 and all have been a good experience.

Another good example of why to do your own maintenence.
I have a 97 E420 with 170k and havent spent more that $1500 in the five years Ive owned it. Maybe you just had a bad apple.

In my experience 35 years in the motor trade these problems are owner created ignoring warning lights in the hope that nothing is wrong is the usual cause, mechanical ignorance, have seen it many times,an audi 100 many years ago the owner ran it out of oil, ignored the oil light, and just drove it until it seized solid, total supidity !. An engine thats done 100000 mile does not just throw a rod for no reason, this is usualy caused by lack of oil to the bearing shell this then destroys itself and the big end cap hammers on the crank pin stretches the bolts the bolts loosen and hay presto the cap comes of and the rod goes through the side of the block, seen it loads a times. Always take note of any oil problems, soon as that light comes on stop ! !

What is the point for the post on this forum? Most people use this forum to learn more about the car they have chosen to own. It sounds like you do not know anything about your car and you habitually dole out the cash to make someone else fix it. Go back an rant on the other forum unless you have some useful information for the rest of us.
