Catalytic Converter HELP!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!
I have a 1997 e420 and I think my cats. are bad because i can here the popcorn popping underneath the car . So i'm going to make no attempt of going to the dealer. I was wondering how many cats. are on each side of the car and which one usually goes bad? Can i run a straight pipe? Can I just use universal cats. from magnaflows and how many i need if so what part number do i need?

hmmmm well what tends to make that "popcorn" noise is the tile like pieces tht are stuck into the cats under there, u can try to go under there urself, and see what's up, maybe it's a little DIY. mine was.
good luck bro. if nothing seems like u can fix, then it looks like u may need new cats.

I had the popcorn sound too.
However, it only happened while in gear, more intense at idle and disappeared when driving.
---
Like sflcko2, it was not the cats but a broken weld on the pipes. Couldn't see the break unless pressure was put between the pipes. My neighbor and I welded it for free and all is fine now. BUT I wonder how many people they stick with new cats?
----
Figure out when and where your sound is coming from.

Don't panic, it is usually the driver's side rear cat that is causing the problem. I had one installed for $220 from Lou's Custom exhaust in North Reading, Mass.

my CLK55 has 4 cats and a 2.5 foot long resonator. The 02 sensors are inbetween the first set of cats and second, so I had the rear cats PLUS the resonator cut out and replaced with 3.5" piping.
the car sounds MEAN! no C.E.L. either.

OK you are now illegal and to a feseral offense. When, and not if you are caught the fine will be more than many sets of Cats and eventually the sensors will turn on the CEL and bet no reputable shop will work on the car.

Thanks for your comments, but guess what whenever something happens guess who has to pay for it. And beside there won't be a problem about working on when you do everthing yourself! Besides talked to a guy that is MB tech and he told me that it wouldn't be a problem since i'm in a state that doesn't enforce emission laws and i wouldn't get a c.e.l light either.thanks anyway!

What you fail to realize is that who car is it anyway,
The fact that you did this yourself and do all the repairs yourself, most likely in this manner does not speak very highly for your abilities or your thought process. what are you saying? Why would you take a car to dealership when you can do it yourself just say you want do it, speak for yourself this is my car I care for it the way I want. Again this is not your car, I cut them off now that the end of it. You don't know what was told to me by a MB tech. So I think he would know better than you! Keep taking your car to the stealership and leave me alone.

Good luck ever selling YOUR car.
If you do it will be an illegal transaction.
Penny wise, pound foolish.
If you can't afford to maintain a car, you can't afford to own it.

Perhaps you should own a 1957 DeSoto and stop "showing off" that you're a Mercedes owner.

Agreed!! But then again this guy asks for help, then brags about doing something thats against Federal Law, and *****es that someone calls him on it!! For all we know he does not even drive this car and might well be living in it!! Some one should report him to the feds and he will learn that Mississippi is still within the US. He may not realize this!!
