third party extended warranty

Has anyone gone with continental warranty?
They quoted me 3600 dollars for a zero-deductible warranty that pretty much covers everything except the exhaust system for 49K miles or 49 months. I have 71000 miles so that would be good till 120,000 miles. Is that a good deal? Are these warranties worth it?
What, if any, extended warranty programs have you guys heard of or gone with? Thanks!

Pretty

steep,at 25% of the value of the car.Keep it tuned, gets those failing cats changed under the 8/80 warranty, trans fluid changed,as well as other fluids,Do the brakes when due,and you should have no major issues.$3600 for a warranty will not include these maintenance items, and they are the most important things to do for peace of mind, and long car life....

for my post on A and B service. Also edmunds.com has a very nice maintenance schedule, under tips and advice, maintenance costs. You enter year ,model ,miles, and it shows the current to do list.Just don't believe the prices they have for labor,it is way off the mark,as anyone that has been to the dealer can attest.

Continental seems just as sketchy as the rest of the online warrantys out there with a slightly nicer website. I almost fell for their pitch.

I had a similar situation so I just called Amex and they took off the charge immediately.

Listen to ohlord. He is right on the money. I have never heard anything good about third party warranty companies. If you follow a good maintenence schedule, you should be fine.

I live in California, and I bought the "extended warranty" which is called here as "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" (MBI). I bought the "Elite package" which is the highest (apart from another similar to factory warranty that my car did not qualify for b/c factory warranty had already expired). I bought it 2.5 years ago when I bought my car used at 46,000 miles. The company does business under different names and is based in the MidWest but I suspect they are all the same. I paid $2,200 for 4 years or 48,000 miles. The MBI I have calls for the item to be listed in the policy in order to be covered. Recently, I had to have the flooor shifter changed, and they would not cover it. Then the mass air flow sensor failed and they would not cover b/c they say it's an emmissions control problem... But I'm sure they will cover transmission or engine if failed. I hope this info is helpful in making your decision.

thanks

hey guys, thanks for your advice. i did cancel my warranty as i think the car is fine except for the cats... and the cats are covered under federal warranty by the dealer for up to 80,000 miles.
i'm bringing it in to the dealer today. i hope the second cat goes soon so i can have both replaced before 80K.
anyone have tips on how to make it go? should i just drive the car harder for the next few thousand miles?

I purchased a warranty through Continental about three years ago. Six months later my transmission failed. They were only willing to cover the cost for a used transmission. In addition the allowed labor rates where way below the going rates in the Dallas area. I had to come out of pocket an additional $1000 to have it fixed right. In my opinion it isn't worth the investment.

Be sure to change your transmission fluid on a regular basis. I learned my lesson the hard way. If you rely on "lifetime transmission fluid" you transmission won't have much of a life.
