A little WHINE in the dash...

I have a 2000 E430 and while driving or with the engine off I hear a motor whine in the dash. At sometimes it gets pretty loud and is very annoying. Is it related to the HVAC (which is off and I still hear it)?

Check that the noise is really from the dash

could it be coming from the little fan that is in the vented round object up by the dome light by the rear view mirror.Sometimes that fan which moves air past the temp sensor that provides climate control data for interior temp gets dirty, you can vac it or goes bad you can replace it.
worth checking.

I checked the noise again and it is coming from the dash, behind the center where the A/C vents are.

run

the diagnostics, post the values to make sure everything is up to par, then it may be taken to the next step.Decrease fan speed to zero so cc shows off and press the ec button so the light comes on showing the a/c is off.Do you still hear the sound?

So do I......it is really annoying.
In my case it comes from the small black opening near raer view mirror.

Dear Experts: What to do?

2002 E320 4matic 92K (bought 12/20/06). 2000 E430 4matic (RIP 12/9/06) :(
mine is doing that. no ticking, just a hissing/whining sound that is louder than it had been before the weather started getting colder. could that have anything to do w/ it?

It's normal that a fan runs and intakes air at this location. It must be there for the HVAC system to work as designed.

When motors fail they make more noise than when they are brand new.

Do you see the way ahead?
