Catalytic Converters & Warranty

Hello all,

I saw this issue was recently discussed and wanted to get some additional information concerning warranty work.

My car is a 1999 E320 with less than 80,000 miles on it. My mechanic (an independent) said they are going out and will be pricey to fix. From what OhLordGet said in a previous post, 'it's covered under the 8year 80000 mile warranty.Don't delay if you go over 80k it will be expensive.' This was in reference to a 2001, was this true of 1999s?
Thanks for all the advice as usual!

-Peter

That was going to be my next question. How do they determine the age of the car for warranty work? Seems silly, but if they go on year alone, i'm over 8 years. If they go by manufacture date, or purchase date, I'm under 8 years (bought later 1999).

They're going. He said the left side is rattling a bit but I should be able to get some more miles out of it. I'm located in Philly.

Thanks!

dec 99

would be 8 years dec 07 so no matter what it is over 8 years.racepages.com has oe cats for about 50 bucks, check with them.any good muffler shop can splice them in.

even your indie if he can work on pipes.

duh! i was doing the calculation wrong in my head. indeed the warranty is up no matter.

a few quick questions then
-pardon my ignorance, but is there a single catalytic converter in my car? From this page, http://www.racepages.com/products/?N...270+11207+9189, they list an Eastern Catalytic Converter and an Eastern Front Left Catalytic Converter. With either work?
-ballpark, what do you figure a good muffler shop would charge to splice them in and how might I go about finding a good muffler shop?
-is there any reason, mechanically, to fix this sooner rather than later?

I'm assuming if I had my mechanic do the work, he'd purchase the entire replacement part (the one listed for $500+) and then charge me a few hours to put it in?

Thank you all again for the guidance!

I just replaced the left front pipe w/cats assembly on my 2000 E320.The unit's rear cat. started rattling at 83K. Each of the front pipes have (2) small catalyst built in. The left pipe rear cat seems to be the one that goes out most often. My neighbor is a Benz service manager and he says that is typical to see the cat. assemblies start rattling at about 100K.
When I replaced the L/F pipe I also replaced all (4) O2 sensors. It makes sense to do so at 80K. The R/F sensor had started throwing a heating circuit fault code. I am sure the other three would have been started throwing fault codes soon as well.

I just had my right side (passenger side) cat replaced two months ago - the entire right side! Much to my chagrin, I was over 80k miles - My service advisor at my local dealership told me that one of the MB mechanics does work on the side! The dealership was going to charge me $900 to replace the entire right side, but, the mechanic only charged me $400 while using OEM product....FYI

You can also take it to midas or a good muffler shop who will probably use after-market cat to replace - Good luck!

ohlord and other forum members,

is there an easy way to tell when it's time to replace/splice in new converters? my mechanic said the left side was rattling a few thousand miles ago and I can hear a slight rattle. any other indicators or things i can easily check?

thanks!

ohlord,

1) no codes
2) not sure whether or not I will be able to do this but thanks for the suggestion!
3) it's running fine, just a slight rattle
4) there are a ton of splice units, anything i should know? or, will a muffler place have/be able to order the correct part to splice in?

a few more questions.
1) my mechanic said the left one is going out. when i take it to a muffler shop, should i have them just replace the left one, or get them all done while i'm there?
2) any suggested muffler shops (chains) that should be able to do this? or should i try and find a good local shop to do the work.
3) any idea how much it should cost (labor-wise) to splice in a converter? always good to know a range when getting estimates.

thanks again!
