Need a little help

Hello everyone. I have to get my E320 smog tested so I can get it registered, but, the check engine light is on. I had my friend's dad (an auto mechanic) check the code, and he said the code is for the air pump. I also checked the code myself at autozone, and i got the same code as the one he gave me, P1420. From the research I've done online, I've read that it is the air pump switchover valve. I tried to have the code erased then, but that code would not erase. Is there anyway to have to code reset so the check engine light stays off? If not, is there an easy solution to fixing this, or would I have to buy a whole air pump? I could not find any place online that sells the air pump switchover valve. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So, it doesn't sound illegal to you to hide a problem that will cause you to fail the test?

You're looking for co-conspirators?

Well I'm not looking to take out the lightbulb or anything. I'm looking for a way to legally turn it off, or a solution for the problem, whichever is easier/cheaper.

Get

the 94169 scanner from
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/retail_stores.taf
about 40 bucks if one near you they will match internet price.
plug it in erase the codes, check power to and operation of the sec air pump, working at start up when cold?all lines plugged in?fuse good
See if the code comes back.
You need to solve the problem, there are no short cuts, clearing the code will only clear the light and if the condition is still present the code will still be stored in the diagnostics as pending and that will be detected at the smog station.Clearing it will also set all your I/M status codes to not ready and they will send you packing anyway.
Clear the codes, read them again and post them here.Make sure you write the number down correctly.

Thanks for the info, but how do I check the power and operation of the "sec air pump?" i don't even know where it is. And which fuse would be the one to check? Any info is great, thanks.

pull the engine cover

on the front of the engine is a electric pump when the engine is cold started it comes on and pumps extra air into the exhaust so that the cats come up to operating temp faster so less pollution gets into the air. When you start the car in the morning you should be able to hear or feel the pump working(keep hands away from moving belts).Check the wires and any lines to it are plugged in.The fuse is listed on the fuse chart in your battery box, there is also a relay for the switch valve.Off hand I don't remember the numbers of those items(at 57 my brain can only store just so much information.)

pdf and some pics of a 99 fuse chart on benzworld.org w210 section
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...2-12-08-a.html

if you search if not listed it is most likely in the underhood fuse box with all the relays, look for and test a 30amp fuse might be #45.

Thanks for the help ohlord. I went ahead and bought the air pump with the help of car-part.com. I found it for only $50 in my city, and it is from a newer e320 than mine too, so I'll have it installed tomorrow by a mechanic, unless someone knows how to install it, and can guide me on how to do it, and maybe I can give it a try installing myself. Otherwise, I'll just leave it to the mechanic to do. But I have one quick question, my trunk does not open by the smartkey, or by the open trunk button. It only opens with the little metal key. Does this mean my trunk motor is messed up, or does anyone think there is an easy solution. I appreciate all the help.

Did you

check that the old pump worked or that it had power to it or jumped it with a jumper to see if it worked?
I hope the new used one does the trick.
disconnect the battery neg lead(through the little door in the pass side rear foot well, make sure the key is out)then follow the directions in the manual to resync everything when you are done, also get your radio code in the book or from the dealer so you can enter it when done.

When I started the car, I did not notice any movement or hear any sound coming from the air pump, so I'm not sure if it's working. The car has power, so I think the air pump should be getting power too. About the trunk, I just tried WD-40 on the latch and keyhole, but that still didn't solve the problem. The key opens the trunk easier now, but the trunk still doesn't open the other ways. I did notice though, that there was a buzzing/air releasing kind of noise that sounded like it was doing something, like trying to open the trunk, but nothing happened. Does anyone know a possible reason?
