Mobile-1 0W-30 instead of 0W-40
Hello everyone,
I just inherited a 1999 E320 4-Matic. I read around and found the oil to use is 0W-40 Mobile1. My local Wal-Mart does not carry 0W-40 but instead has 0W-30 ($22 for 5 qt). Would that be safe to use? What do these numbers mean. I am in the Chicagoland area if that matters (temperature).

it is to thin, and not mb spec 229.5
napa and other auto stores have the 0w40 the engine needs.

Don't mess around with the oil! Use what MB recommends. There is too much at steak to experiment. Other oils could be just fine, but i would not want to find out that they aren't the hard way $$$$$$.

You can get it at Amazon.com if you can't find it locally. Don't forget the fleece filter if you want full benefit. Filter is available from autohausaz.com among others.

Since we are on the topic of motor oil, what about 5W-30, synthetic, penzoil? I just need to add a quart now and then and will that be good enough? I got a few bottles left over.

different detergents and shear values.In a pinch to top off but don't make a habit of it.How much oil are you going thru?I've never had to top off during 10-11 k fss intervals.0w40 mobil1 always.

I had the car for 9 years. About 4 months ago was the first time I have added a quart, w/0-40 mobil 1 of course. I have since had a Schedule A at an indie shop, and check the oil after a wash two days ago and oil level is fine. I have another bottle of 0-40 and a case of 5-30 for my truck (bought them on sale!). Just wondering. Thanks for the info.

mobil 1 is thin as it is, so id definitely stick with a 40wt on these cars.
on the other hand, German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 is thick for a 30wt, so its acceptable for use (i've been using it for the past 1k miles with excellent results).

40 weight
is 40 weight and 30 weight is 30 weight.It is a standard set at a certified temp that all oil is rated at.Any oil that is rated 40 wt is the same viscosity as any other rated oil that is 40 wt.
There are no thin 40 wts and thick 30 weights.
Use mobil 1 ow40 mb spec
use german syntec if you want ,but it is not a thick 30 weight it is just 30 weight and as such like all 30weights is to thin to meet amg engine use,and is most likely to thin for use in area of high temps.

considering also that mobil one shears much easier than GC, GC is a great choice for these engines.

The higher the value, the more viscous the fluid. Since viscosity varies inversely with temperature, its value is meaningless unless accompanied by the temperature at which it is determined. With petroleum oils, viscosity is now commonly reported in centistokes (cSt), measured at either 40°C or 100 °C (ASTM Method D445 - Kinematic Viscosity).

right, I agree that all 40wts are thicker than the heaviest 30wts. But to say that all 30wts have the same CST@100 is just untrue. GC is a thick 30wt, and tends not to shear as much as mobil 1, so after 3k miles, they may have the same viscosity.
Furthermore, it is a general policy of mine that you should run the thinnest oil that you can. More power and better mpg, without any noticeable lack of lubrication. While I would not run a Mobil 1 30wt in any car, I don't think a 30wt is necessarily a problem in this engine, high miles or not.
