ENGINE OIL SENSOR - VISIT WORKSHOP

That's what it says...now don't tell me that the sensor is stuck somewhere inside the engine. Is there a DIY for replacing that sensor?

Hi Ghaffar,

Can you update how do you solve this problem? Mine is having the same error rightnow? Will it solve by replacing the engine oil sensor?

Many thanks.

If the oil level is okay (check with dipstick), then the problem may be a bad battery. Faulty errors are often a sign of a dip in battery voltage.

The oil level sensor is located in the lower half of the oil pan. Once the lower portion of the pan is removed, the sensor is easy to replace. IIRC, one bolt and a cable connection. The hard part is the pan. There is no molded gasket/seal from MB. You need to get the right sealant and make a bead along the edge of the pan and reinstall.

Hi RichardM98,

Thank you for your information. Based on your explanation, as long as the oil level is enough, my engine will works fine regardless low speed (80km/h) or top speed (240km/h). I replaced a new battery (DIN100), old one already dead, but the error persisted. Anyway, I will wait until the next oil change to replace the sensor if needed so.

Thank you so much.
Cheers,

I have a similar problem with my 2001 E320, with less than 9k miles on it. Even though the oil level is exactly correct (and I've lowered it twice and then filled to the proper level) I get error messages (malfunction) all the time. Will tell me the oil level is low, then the next time out it will tell me it's high. One day I will drive it a few miles and no warning at all, then the following day will drive the same distance and get five or six.

I've been told my an independent shop that for the 1998/1999 models, this was a common problem and you had to replace the sensor in the pan. The shop also feels that has happened to mine. I'll have my replaced when I have the next oil change done. The warnings are annoying, but I since I know that the level is correct, no harm to the motor.

I believe this is what needs to be replaced, but haven't been by the shop to verify.

Hi Richard98,
are there 2 different oil sensors ? I have a 2002 E320, I was getting the "ENGINE OIL SENSOR" Message for a while. Now I also get "ENGINE OIL LEVEL" Message.
Is it the same problem?

AFAIK, there is only one sensor which measures the oil level and the oil quality. If the sensor is faulty the ECU may display an error. The sensor itself may display an error as well. There may not be a contradiction if the sensor is faulty and only working part of the time OR as I mentioned earlier in this thread you have a failing battery.

The first thing to do is confirm the actual oil level mechanically (dipstick) since running the engine with a low oil level increases wear.

Oil level on a 2005 e320

I have a "faulty oil sensor" message but 2005 E320 CID has no dipstick.
A real stupid arrangement.

Agreed. Probably better posted in the W211 section...this is the W210 (the model before yours).

If you have a dipstick tube you may be able to purchase a dipstick. It seems as if, MB has caved in to dealers who want to capture the oil change revenue.

Old thread but wanted to update my post for anyone that might have this problem / issue in the future. I recently had the sensor replaced and no more oil-level related messages of too high and then too low. Total cost was $450 for sensor and related oil & filter change.

I have a 1998 E320 W210 and I just arrived from the dealership for the harmonic balancer recall. Service advisor told me that I need to replace the oil level switch because it was leaking oil. Is it the same as the one you guys are talking here (Engine oil sensor)? If it is, can you guys tell me what part number is it?

Sadly, the dealership I went to doesn't give out part numbers. I won't ask it if I know it or it's on the paper.

oil leak from centre of my e300td oil level sensor cured by: draining oil - removing sensor (two bolts) - thoroughly degrease sensor by soaking in brake/clutch cleaner fluid. - dry by airline - pack small amount of high temperature silicon sealant into deepest inside part of sensor (around central conductor) - allow time for full silicone cure. - replace both large and small "o" rings - replace sensor and oil. Fixed.

Do you have the part number for the oil sensor needed for the 98 E320? The warning light came on today.
