HID Fogs for W210 E55
Has anyone replaced their fog bulbs to a 6000 HID? Is it worth it? I have a 2002 E55 and I am debating if I should just keep it stock or do a 6000 HID. I would like a brighter white to go with the Xenons. Are the HID Fogs reliable? Thanks for the input!

Fogs
are not for bright, fogs are for low wave length and beam pattern.Using anything
brighter defeats the purpose, leaves you blind in the fog and blinds other drivers coming at you.
Read all about fogs at www.danielsternlighting.com and if you run non hid bulbs try the selective yellow euro spec bulbs.look unique and really cut fog and rain in bad weather

ohlord,
Thank you for your feedback. However, I know the purpose of fog lights. I rarely drive the E55 in rain, snow, fog, sleet or any inclement weather. That is why I am inquiring about brighter lights and HID. I would benefit a lot more with a brighter driving light than a fog light.

Get
driving lights. The reflector pattern in the fog is for a purpose and since you want to defeat that purpose for show and you if don't mind blinding other drivers keep the stock buckets and install the hids, you may trigger lamp malfunction warnings and cause wire harness problems.Or do it by retro fitting a relay and a set of real driving lights.

They have the Japan made hid's and not that China b.s.with bad ballasts 1/2 the time... A lot of E55's have these including mine (3000k yelllows FTW)and no problem
ps. 6000k is very cool too and is what most people have.

Copy
you on that one
My polished oem lenses with the 65 watt H7 rally bulbs outshine with the correct pattern any of the hid and hacked up retro fit hid systems.I like to drive and my headlights and fog lights are evidence of Go rather than show, and I know you follow the same thoughts.
I can't change their minds in most cases, but I refuse to give up,for if I do then they will have changed me

For the money they spend a flashlight strapped to the hood would throw more light

I also prefer function, and I hear/read that the yellow lights work better for the fog lamps. But, from reading above it seems that they wouldn't work well with my factory hid. Did I get that right?

Yes, I know I have defeated the purpose of the fog lights. I did it for show. No bashing need. Thanks.
I did mine fogs with 6000k and headlamps at 4300k. The only problem that you might run into is the fog would "blink" once in a while. I thought I might have a bad ballast. But I believe that since the wattage on the HID is lower at 35w, it might trigger the computer thinking that the bulb is out. My tech told me always start the car prior to turning on the light.

I have 3000K HID fogs and love them. They throw a yellow light with hints of blue & green. As far as function I havent had a problem either mechanically or performance wise granted I hardly ever use them since the ZAM HID upgrade w/ new Ultinon 5000K bulbs is so bright already. The stock fogs were marginal at best - old scratched lenses didnt help either. New lenses + HID = happiness for me. If Virginia State Trooper's dont have a problem when I'm behind them or approaching them then I know I'm good to go anywhere else. I aimed them carefully as not to blind people but cant be responible for people who stare into them no more than you can blame the sun for the same. I have no warnings and they power up and work with no issues. Fashion, Function, or both = Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I got mine from Stealth Auto - the slim ballast version and mounted them myself in less that a couple of hours. Just make sure you get the right bulb and it will be a basic plug and play - no anti flicker capacitor needed. I also made sure to silicone the seam of the ballast and used JB weld to secure them as the double sided tape that they send with the kit worked for all of two days. I think I paid around $150 for the kit but it took longer to come than I'd like (back order). Just google them and also see if they have any coupon codes online - thats what I did and got free shipping. I can take some pics tonight but with my camera phone you probably wont get the full effect as you would in person.

Not at all difficult - just so long as you take your time. I'd give it a 3 at most - pretty much plug and play after fitting the new bulb. Theres a DIY on it at the BW forum by YachtMaster. He did a hell of a write up and his DIY gives all the detail you need including the difference in heat generation between the OEM and HID retrofit. Ohlord gives great advice though about some of the systems out there frying components and having sub standard performance but with the kit I got there have been no issues. Also - I used a Dremel for the retrofit of the bulb (must cut a hole in the bulb housing cover) - makes the job really easy. No need to remove the front bumper - just use jack and jack stands to lift the front, remove the lower engine cover, and youll have access to the fog lights. Just use the doors on the lower engine cover to access your OEM lights and check your bulbs if your not sure of what kit to buy (H1 vs H3). The sport / E55 uses H3 while I believe the non sport uses H1. I just checked again and I paid 175 for the kit.
