Exterior Lamp Defective

Folks:

1999 E430:

I got this indicator on the instrument cluster while driving. I checked all exterior lamps and all appear to be OK. When I turn off car and strat it up lamp fault appears to go away and may come back on.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Regards,

Joe

Thanks for your response

Ray:

When this lamp fault went on, I did not have the lights on. Am I correct in elliminating the headlights, marker lights front & back and parking lights as well as taillights and license plate light? All seem to be working. The reverse lights work as well. If I am driving in the day time with the lights off, which lights can cause the fault? The brake lights work. What is/are left and where is it/they located?

Thanks & regards

Joe

joe-
if all lights are off as you say, then i can only think of the brake lights being
monitored. how did you verify that they were working? did you see via
reflection, or have someone stand in back as you stepped on the pedal?
did you verify the Dole light in the rear of the pax compartment?

...i was rush typing at work and see I omitted the fog lights (2) on the list

For brake light, start engine and wait to see if the indicatore come on. If not, then press brake pedal. If it is brake, then you will see the message.

Joe, check the license plate lamps again. There are 2 and a lot of people miss that.

Sometimes it is the yellow and/or white bulb holder that is the in culprit in the rear tail lights. I replaced mine and all is well. If you bend the contacts out a little so there is better contact made and use an electric jell bot at any parts store you will have better contact and also seal the contact area. Hope this thought helps.

Good point, I forgot about the tail light sockets, that might be it.

Since we are on the lighting subject, my passanger side tail light dosen't blink as bright as it used to. It is dimmer than the drivers side tail light. How can I fix this problem???

Replace left and right bulbs at the same time. Bulbs will dim with time. This is especially true with the headlights. The bulb holders are also veery inexpensive and new cost a couple bucks a piece. New connectors and bulbs should should bring back the bright.

Thanks for the replies.

I have fooled with the contacts for all bulbs and their holders and the message has not returned for a couple of days. Speaking of the holders, one of mine is really difficult to remove, the passenger side brake. Do you guys know the part number and where can I get an extra one in case it breaks.

Thanks for all the help.

Regards,

Joe
