Spring Perch Preventative Action?

When I put in my lowering springs I peeled away the weather seal on one of the spring perches and saw rust everywhere underneath. My question is, instead of cutting away and installing new ones, would it be a good idea to just grind away all the rust and re-weld all around the spring perch for reinforcement?

Thanks.

Rust is like cancer. Even if you grind it all away, it has a possibility of coming back. I had rust on my trunklid and i got the rust removed and 3 months later it came back.

The question is whether you can seal it well enough to prevent further contact with water and oxygen. I don't know of any product that works as well as the factory e-coat.

Try grinding away and then treating with an anti corrosive such as what The Eastwood Company sells to convert rust to a non corrosive black form. I do not remember the name but it is on their website and is a very popular product. It sprays on deep red and can be used as a base coat primer.

I thought of that or Rust Bullet.

Thanks for all the replies. I still don't know if it's a good idea to do some extra welding for reinforcement? or even going as far as welding blocks of steel to provide more welding area from the perch to the frame.

Replace the

mounts.Dealer sells the cups that you splice in.If you see that much rust,it is probably past the point of grinding.

Rust Bullet

I just used this product on the body rust on my E300. The results are good, but time will tell. I cleaned my areas down with a air grinder and gasket removal "cookie" wheel. I coated the now cleaned metal with Rust Bullet, allowed to dry two days the sprayed the area over with DTM black primer. In the spring I plan to paint the entire car.

Now as far as the spring perch goes....
I would make real sure that your only talking about surface rust. If the rust is heavy I WOULD NOT try to clean, reweld and paint. Your talking about a structural element, there is no way to know for sure to what extent it has been weakened. Far too risky in my opinion.
