welded diff
#2
I did it to my half broken diff(spider gears cracked) and it was TERRIBLE. Going around tight corners the inside tire drags because it spins as fast as the outside tire. Going 60 around a corner known as "Hospital Curve" in the rain I lost the tail and drifted the last half of the corner. It certainly surprised me but nothing I wasn't used to by then... Dont do it. Get a Phantom Grip LSD block for $499.99 with the extreme springs for around 50-70% lock up, its the same as the Kleemann **** just 1000+ dollars cheaper. That's what I ended up doing.

Actually I saw a recent Kleemann price list showing W210 LSD for around 899 or 895. Kleemann has recently been getting agressive with most of their prices. However seeing how the Phantom Grip looks almost identical and is about 1/2 the price its probably the better deal.

I own a 1999 W210 Mercedes.
Welded diffs are horrible. Every u-turn feels like something is going to give and eventually you will end up breaking something. I would rather go with Max's advice...

dont listen to these guys i have a welded diff on my 89 240sx and it works like a dream. i slide all u turns and i never have a problem with it. if you are trying to get into drifting an e320 is the perfect car to begin with

Of course you are referring to track drifting and not street drifting I presume. As a new member maybe you should learn first then offer advice since what you have offered so far makes no sense at all. A nearly 4000lbs luxury car is not the ideal car not by a country mile and the W210 in stock form does not have the hp/lbs ratio to make any sense for the sport. A welded differential on the street is a dangerous thing and at the least you will break costly parts.

320
drifting with a 722.6.
4 wheel controlled slides around mountain roads at 120 plus, sure but a drifting machine? Whom is kidding whom. I race several models on tracks across the country, 320's are fun hot lappers not asain night welder differs 240sxr's
Give me a break.
All hail the new Tommyboy

my logic is that e320 is a great car to drift with and i am talking about street drifting that is more fun. i slide my e430 sometimes and it is like the best feeling when i hit a u turn at 35 and drift it and then run from the cops. i will only drift on the streets never on the track. i say go ahead with it and get the welded diff done. i have a good guy that will do it send me a message and i willl help u get set up........ REMEMBER SMOKE TIRES NOT DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Newbie
My experience with a welded diff was actually when i owned an S13 240sx. Felt horrible and eventually would have broken something.
An E320 is a much heavier car and has ESP, so i dont understand how it would be a perfect car for drifting. And if indeed you "drift" your e-class on the streets, i sure hope you get pulled over. newbie...

ML320, Looking for my S4
Haha, yeah I did get the S4, I put the car down and I'm building the motor. It ran 11.6 @ 119 on pump, so now I'm shooting for 9's with a 130+ trap.
Similar setup I might be running soon.

just finished reading up on the other thread. If its true massive props man, however, it would be interesting to see em both run

Congrats on the S4
Forged pistons?
Nice to see you took all the jabbing and are mature enough now to be a valued member. Just wish you had not gone over to the Audi side

Well, if i do it everything will be forged, balanced, polished, some parts cryo'd etc etc. However before this fun project gets outa hand I might just sell my blue demon, I might be getting a job in HK. So right now everything is on hold and all bets are off.
On a side note, I dont need to take the 7 train to flushing meadows, its right outside my window heh
