722.6 transfluid change Question...

I was at my MB dealer this morning to order the fluid, filter, trans-oil-pan-gasket. The guy was asking me if I also wanted "the pin to refill the trans through the dipstickshaft". Anyways they didn't have the pan-gasket in stock so I'll pick it all up next week. I can borrow the dipstick tool from a friend. But Pin? What Pin?!

It is that "tamper" proof cover-pin on top of the dipstick tube plug. You do not have to have one because you can re-uses the old one (but you have to break the top part off). However a new one is cheap and will look more "official".

after

you break the locking tab to remove the trans cap (if nobody has done it before you) you need not replace the locking tab, just put the cap back on the tube end.It has a rubber o ring that holds it into the pipe. No reason for the lock other than Mercedes installing it for the lifetime fluid which you know was a big mistake on their part since you are changing it
be sure to follow the diy work clean no linty rags no dust no dirt and fill to level slowly go shy of full amount and bring it up to proper level slowly.
Do not over fill.

I can say from expirience that on a 722.6 connected up to a 606 diesel that the cap WILL vibrate off w/o the lock reinserted.

Install a bigger o ring

everything on a diesel will vibrate off if not locked or pressure fit on

I agree which was why I commented. The OP owns a diesel and therefore your advice wasnt appropriate. My old cap "snapped" down in place just like its replacement does; on a diesel at least, that is no guarantee it is going to stay there for the long term.

I was kidding

has everyone a desire to be appropriate all the time?

install a thicker o ring and it won't come off and you can check fluid level and condition any old time you feel like it and not be indebted to the dealer for locking tabs which you don't need.

to each his own though

Mines not a 606 but a 604 Diesel. I believe the 4-cylinder even vibrates more than a 6 so that must be why he told me about it. I'll see when I pick it all up during next week...

I picked the eintire kit up today. You can see the new pin. It was only 57 cents! Next to it is a new ring for the torque converter oilplug. Did they give me the correct oil? (just to be sure) It says MB ATF 134.

That is the latest fluid from Mercedes (236.14 specs).

You may already have this, but you also need a drain plug washer for the oil pan. That one is made of copper (not aluminum as the TQ drain plug washer).

That's

the new fluid. Good to go and change it again in 40k miles. No need to change the filter next time.
Work clean. No dust or lint. Check the pan for flatness and torque properly.
Refill slowly once you get close to the volume you removed.
Have fun.

ha.. my car was smooth as a young childs *** before the motor mounts started decaying i asume... and the engine was silent as new petrol 1.0ltr engine still waiting to do a long overdue oil/filter change ... I was curious if any one with diesels have done valve adjustment recently?

MB diesels have had hydralic valves for ~20 years now.

Sometimes the hydraulic valve lifters develop a ticking sound that goes away after an oil change. The only other thing you can to do is replace the ticking lifter.

Job done! Thanks for the torque info Rob! The tab on the filler cap was broken so they've done a fluid change sometime in the past. I had no transmission problems whatsoever but what came out looked like diluted engine oil with a dark greenish color to it!!! Took a pic afterwards comparing the new fluid to what came out...

My fluid looked like that also. I believe it's from graphite in the torque converter. It wasn't burnt or smelly, just dark.
