2000 E-Class Structural Improvements

I am looking with intent to buy a 2000 E320. It's manufacture date was 11/99. I was reading in the insurance institutes for highway safety web site that starting Jan/2000 there were structural improvements to the E-Class. Can anyone validate this one way or another. Also when were the head side curtain airbags introduced? Thanks

I think your insurance just wants more money dont think there was any change accept the facelift for 2000 but 11/99 counts as 2000 so if there were any changes you good anyway because that car already is for 2000. Curtains were already in 99 meaby the rear side air bags are for 2000.

2000 E320 Side Curtain Airbags

My 2000 model E320 does not have an "SRS" button on the top of the vertical column between the front and rear doors. The drawing in the owner's manual shows an "SRS" button in that place. I am wondering whether my 2000 E320 really has the side curtain airbags as I have been told recently that it is a law that there be something there to show the presence of the airbags. I have them on the doors, the steering wheel, and on the passenger dashboard but nothing up top.

Any other year 2000 E320 owners out there who have noticed the same thing?

Check the vin# for the build specs

a car built in 99 could be registered as a 00 and not have the side curtain bags.
They are very safe no matter what.
If you are looking, check here before you but.Inspect,inspect,inspect.........
did I say inspect?

2001 E430
There was a post showing crash tests on youtube of the pre and post facelift W210s. The pre facelifts had lots of distortion in the A pillar area. Post facelift fared much much better. Maybe someone else can dig it up.

2000 E320 Sedan
That Mercedes Benz Club Russia is an interesting site. All of the codes match up with the card I have with the car and what I see. I have documents from the original selling dealer so I am not concerned that the car has been altered. Its Carfax is also clean.

What does bug me is that all of the internet sites say side curtain airbags are standard on all 2000 E320s. My owner's manual has a drawing in it showing the side curtain airbags and the presence of the "SRS" on the top of the vertical column between the doors, but there is no "SRS" on the column in my car. How can they sell a 1999 as a 2000 and include the 2000 owner's manual with it? Something like that never occured to me. Maybe they are there but there is simply no "SRS" to go along with it? Someone recently told me that it is a federal regulation that an "SRS" be located near an airbag as a warning that it is there. If I don't have an "SRS" so it looks like they are not there. I will ask the dealership next time it is in.

Oh well.

option code for side curtain airbags

It looks like option code 293 is for "sidebag in rear left and right." There are no other option codes for airbags on my card or on the MB Russia cite when I run the VIN. I just ran a VIN for an E320 built in 2000 and it only shows the same 293 option code.

Des anyone know the code for side curtain airbags, if there is a code for it? Thanks.

The begin date for "facelift" production is Jun 1 1999.

There may be some diesels produced after that, but that's not applicable as there are no USA diesel wagons.

Option 293 is the only side airbag option on my '01 wagon.

Kent, A little off topic but do you have any idea why diesels for the US Market was produced after June 1st? I have found about half a dozen diesels thus far with a production date sometime in June...Do you suspect it was due to an extra inventory of the 606.962 engines?

More likely is that there were orders for them. Word surely got out they were going to be the last ones.
