'Lamp Defective' re Brake Lights

The message 'Lamp Defective' came up and when I checked it was both the brake lights that did not flash when the brake pedal was pressed, but the center brake light flashed ok.
I tried wriggingly the brake switch and it solved the problem for about 5 miles of city driving and then came back again.
I tried again with the brake switch and it was ok for a while and again the warning came back.
Any ideas what could be the problem.
I thought if the brake switch was bad then even the center brake light would not work.
Thank you anyone out there who could give some input to this problem.

Sam

Have you checked the bulbs, and the bulb holders?

Check the bulb holders. Sometimes the contacts can get oxidized or loose.

The bottom bulb in my wagon on the drivers side/brakelight always comes loose. I have bent the tabs/changed bulbs/scuffed the metal. I think i will just solder it in place. I'm so over it...Thank goodness there are two brake lights on each side! WOO HOO

Thank you all for your response.
I took the bulbs out from both left and right side and they were both black in color and not clear glass, like a new bulb would be.
This must surely suggest something.
I am going to replace with new bulb's tomorrow and see if that solves the 'Defective Lamp' message.

Try a new bulb holder. They are cheap (as compared to your aggravation level) and replaceable for a reason.....

Some stock taillight sets are plagued with this. No matter what you may still continue to have issues. It is extremely aggrevating. I had the same issue. I was jiggling and twisting those tailight bulbs constantly. Finally I bought the facelift e55 tails off ebay and have had them in for 3 years and have not had to change or fiddle with one bulb. That is what I would suggest doing.
