W210, E 280, 1998 Engine cranks but does not start
I have the a problem that might be the CPS, but with some additional symptoms; car is not starting + computer display is black + saloon rear light is off.
If it is the CPS, please share some photos on where it is located exactly

I was driving the car this morning and it was perfect. came back and parked the car; 3 hours later it is not starting; cranking very well but no start

The computer display was initially on, but after trying to start it several times, to no hope of course, computer display went off.
tried to disconnect the battery, with the key off, then I came to realize that the saloon rear light is off. Odd huh
Disconnected the battery though, both positive and earthing, reconnected after few minutes... still the same.Seems I am about to spend some real money

You help and any input is realy appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Fuse chart should be by the battery under the seat.
Don't go to the dealer if you can't solve it. Call around to mb indie shops and find one that uses an sds machine and they can diagnose it.
Any check engine light?
I oppened my hood today and tried reaching to the CPS; for me... there is no way I can reach it. even after removing thhe plastic cover, I can hardly see the CPS but cann't even see the bolt.
Anyway I got my beauty loaded on a recovery truck to one of the local mercedes mechanics, who is having lunch now. I'll be heading his way again within 15 minutes.
Any ideas on how to convince him that it is the CPS before he costs me alot by changing the fuel pump, and of course the filter, then telling me "oh no, the fault is still there"
Thanks guys.
You won't need to convince a good mb tech of anything he will if good, diagnose it and fix it properly. You are in his hands now. Just let him fix it.

Hi,
First of all, your quick responses is realy outstanding; Thanks a lot.
I have already released the hood to the maximum, read this trick before. But I found it to hard for me to get. Remember, I live in Dubai, Temperature here is 45 degree C.
Anyway, I just came back from the MB tech shop and he has confirmed that it is the fuel pump and that he has already checked the sensor and it is ok. The original MB fuel pump is 163 USD and the labor charge is 32 USD. Fine so far.
Once he is done I'll see what he will do with the blacked out display.
By the way, being too stupid, I have turned around the fuse chart and found out that the English version of the fuse chart was just on the other side

I will let you know this evening once I come back from the tech shop.
Thanks again.

Thank you for your response, actually I haven't checked, the car is still with the local MB tech. The problem has been fixed, by replacing the fuel pump, my car has now done 249,000 Km and I have replaced the fuel pump only once before 4 or may be 5 years.
However, I went to collect the car, but the display is still dark and the rear left window is not working. Not only the display is down, but also the tachometer backlight and everything. He said it might be fuses or something; I suggested to leave it for him to check it further and check back on him tomorrow after work.
Thanks a lot for your support and Rob as well.
I will keep you posted tomorrow on the progress.
Thanks guys.

Thank you all very much; problem solved as follows:

1. Cranking but not starting: Replaced fuel pump

2. Instrument cluster black out: cables connections were fixed as cranking too much, trying to start it, caused the wired connection to malfunction

3. Left rear window: issue is not relevant. Weather here is too hot and I haven't used this window for long time; got stuck due to the humid dusty weather. Removed the window m/c, cleaned and reinstalled and working fine now.

Thank you all.

Tip:
Next time my car cranks without starting I will never keep cranking for long long and several times, destroying other stuff on my beauty.
