'99 E300 TD - Stranded on Vacation!!
Drove fine this morning...went to a Sam's Club and was in the store for 5 to 10 minutes. Came back out and my husband went to start the car. Everything looked normal...lights, glowplug light came on...turned the key and nothing happened. Popped the hood and my husband listened while I turned the key and he heard the right sounds but still nothing. The Sam's mechanic came out and tested the battery...said it was unstable so we bought a new battery. Still the same thing happened.
Of course being on vacation we don't have our repair manual. Does anyone know what side the starter is on?
Please help!!!

If it is turning over it is not the starter.
What is it doing exactly? What are the right sounds as you say your husband heard?
Problem is the engine is not turning over, allowed the car to cool down and it starts right up. Drove for about 8 miles to the hotel shut off engine and tried to restart and the starter did not turn the engine over at all just like earlier. I hear the selenoid clicking when turning the key but no attempt made by starter.
My Mercede's CD info is at home so what i'm looking for could anyting else stop the starter from turning such as a relay.
I have rebuilt engines for 1977 300d 1982 240d and 1975 MGB but this e300 has more electronics that have made me little less confident in trouble shooting
Hope this helps and Thank you for responding.
Sounds like the starter is going south.Heat is expanding it now to the point of failure. You can Call mb roadside assistance and they will come out for free.
Have you tried to take a hammer and tap the case of the starter when it is not working and have someone try to start it.
Good luck
