Threw a belt! Pulley missing? (pic)
So I was out of town this last week and let my girl drive the E430, and wouldnt you know it....it left her stranded. The belt came off, but not damaged. Car overheated too (dammit). In the pic below, is there supposed to be a pulley right above the water pump pulley (the small round silver deal above the h20 pump pulley)? Part number anyone?
What else will I need besides the pulley and more anitfreeze? I started the car for just a few seconds and it seemed fine (noise-wise that is).

[QUOTE=Red66GT;3760272]Well, found a pic. Looks like a pulley broke off! This common?
QUOTE]
I replaced my idle pulley at 78,000 because of bad bearing. I found it while replacing the fan belt. The bearing does fail early. If it seizes the belt will cause the plastic assmebly to spin and melt off or break, then throw the belt. My guess is you had well over 78,000 miles on your pulley.
I replaced mine with a Gates 38082 part (made in Germany) for about $20.00. You will need a wrench to remove the bold, (don't even think about overtightening and stripping it out). Photo of the gates pulley. I would recommend you consider buying this part as replacement.
After removing my pulley I put it in my lathe turned the retaining ring down and pressed out the bearing. I bought a new bearing for $5.00 from a bearing supplier and pressed it back in. I am sure it will work but I used the gates on my MB.
The bearing I removed from the OEM pulley had made in china on it and the replacement had made in china. My guess is they are made in china and the pulley then installed in Germany put in a MB box and sold as MB part.
Hopefully you shut it down quick enough to not warp the heads or other parts.
Best of luck.

Thanks Vett.
Hit the stealership today and they had one in stock! That's exactly what it looks like. From my pic above, it looks like all that is left is the bearing and the plastic is completely gone. Nice. Gonna put the pulley on and put antifreeze in it and cross my fingers!
Hey, another question....where did the antifreeze come out of the engine? It was spraying out around the driver's side headlight and marker light. It's all over the front of the hood and bumper. As I said, I was not there to see the fluid coming out, so I'm wondering where the overflow hose is.......

Napa
Napa was the only place that carried the Zerex G 05 in my area, (Central PA), I checked all the local stores, Autozone, Advance and etc and they thought I was made this product up in my head. I bought for just over $9.50 a gallon.

So, I purchased the wrench set on ebay to remove the fan, and....they sent the wrong size! Supposed to be 36mm, but they sent the 32mm (the second wrench in the pic below). I take it the 32mm is for the V6 engine and the 36mm is for the V8?
Also, the tool that holds the water pump pulley so you can loosen the fan nut is too small. The guy said there is only one size and that it should fit, but it doesnt. Does anyone know? Is there a different tool for the V6 vs V8? I'm talking about tool #113-589-0040-00 (top tool in this pic):
And it says this toolset fits the M113 engine. That is what's in my car right?

will this wis help
1. Hub Securing Bar
(Mercedes Reference 1.Hub Securing Bar 113 0040 Used for securing Waterpump hub from rotating during R&R of Fan clutch nut. This holder bolts onto the hub, as the poly v belt is not in place and cannot be used to lock the hub. Applicable:M112 & M113
Should be used in conjunction with a 36mm thin open end wrench or a 32mm wrench.
You can use a strap wrench also.

if not use a strap
at least you have the torque settings for the install
Yes you have the venerable M113 V8

Oh man I didnt even think to use my strap wrench! You just saved my weekend Ohlord!
Thanks for the links also. I wonder if this is just a cheap tool and is off by just enough to not fit.....ie poorly made tool.

Could be
ebay ya know.
The one I used to have had open slots to slide over ,much more easier.
Have fun, hope too see you back on the road shortly.
Replace the tstat while down there, cheap insurance since you are flushing the whole system.
Be sure to tension the belt properly

Ok, I got out my micrometer today and measured the distances between the bolts on the water pump pulley and compared them with the tool. It seemed the tool had the correct tollerances. So, I thought maybe the throat of the tool was interfering with the 36mm fan nut. I gound off just a little metal in the throat of the tool, and lo and behold, it worked! So, if you guys buy these tools and run into the same problem, just grind er down! Arrows in the pic showed where I ground a little material off.....

Just thought I'd wrap up this thread. Got a new radiator in it and everything is fine. Took it to the MB shop that just did a tranny service to see if I had warped heads or any engine damage and they said everthing checked out! Good compression on all cylinders and no fluid swapping between antifreeze and oil! Phew. These engines are a little more bulletproof than I thought.
I'm still at a loss as to why the radiator would blow out. Dont these things have a pressure bleed-off in the coolant system? You know....like the old school cars that have a radiator cap that will relieve pressure and let it puke out antifreeze before the system pressurizes until failure?
