Motor OIL from dealership.
I went to the dealer (had a gift card) to buy some oil and they told me they only carry Mobil1 5W-40 and did not have any 0W-40(which I normally use).
The parts guy said that it is ok to use the 5W-40(even if mixed with 0w-40)
Here is what is printed on the front of bottle: Fully Synthetic Mobil1 Formula M
SAE 5W-40
on the back of bottle: MB approval 229.3 & 229.5
Is he correct? Can I use this oil for my E320 ?
please advise.

You said 229.3 and 229.5
From the Mobil1 Website:
"Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic engine oil designed to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in diesel powered automobiles that require oil that is approved against Mercedes-Benz MB 229.51 or MB 229.31specifications. Benefits of Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40:............."
If you go to the Mobi1 web site you will see they've also done some renaming and I believe "European Formula" branding has been dropped.
All in all......my guess it would be fine regardless of the fine print.

There are 2 different oils in the US, since MB does not recommend running the low-SAPS oils in gasoline engines over here.
Mobil 1 5w40 ESP Formula M meets 229.31 & 229.51 specs for diesel vehicles with DPF
Mobil 1 5w40 Formula M meets 229.5 & 229.3 for pre-DPF diesels and all gasoline vehicles

It's fine
but why the dealer? Pep boys just had a sale under 5bucks and napa frequently has buck off coupon sales and some walmarts carry or can get 0w40wt mb spec.
5w40 that the dealer has is fine in your engine, but pricey.

Ok...sounds like most of you agree that it is fine
to use the 5W-40 motor oil in the w210 motor. I have used mainly 0W-40 in the past...this time I had a $50 gift card from the dealer and I wanted to make use of it. Actually, they normally sell it for $7.44/ea. not too bad for a stealership.
I also asked how much for coolant and they quoted me $15.50/gal. not too bad considering the Xerex G05 is around $10-12 already....mine as well go with the MB coolant for a few extra dollars.
