Which Mobil oil to use in 1999 E300 turbo diesel

I just bought a 99 E300td and have gotten conflicting input on oil. Is the Mobil 1 5-40 truck diesel oil what is recommended or another mobil 1 oil. Thanks Charles

Note: if Mercedes 229.x is NOT printed on the bottle, it's NOT a suitable oil for your car.

It's NOT on "turbo diesel truck" oil and it is on 0W-40 European Formula Mobil 1.

I completely disagree. Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck should be at least as good as 0w40 for your application. M1 0w40 is a fantastic oil and has high TBN, but 5w40 "TDT" is specifically formulated for diesel engines and has better soot & deposit control than 0w40. Also 0w40 shears rather quickly into a thick-30wt oil at which point it holds viscosity very well, while 5w40 "tdt" doesn't usually shear out of the 40wt range.

Manufacturer specifications are usually a good guideline for choosing oils, but remember that MB generally chooses one oil that will work with their entire product line (gas or diesel) in all climates. I have used both oils and found that both the '05 e320 cdi & '97 e320 ran a bit better on the 5w40 "TDT" out here in California. Now am running new 229.51-spec Mobil 1 5w40 ESP Formula M in the cdi and Mobil 1 10w40 "high mileage" in the e320...best oils yet for both cars.

Don't get me wrong...M1 0w40 will work very well in your diesel, but it is my opinion that:

M1 5w40 ESP Formula M > Mobil 1 5w40 TDT > Mobil 1 0w40

Visit BITOG (Bob is the oil guy dot com) if you'd like some insight from real oil nuts.

i agree with stickygreen on this one, mobil1 5w40 tdt would be my first choise for your engine. also rotella 5w40 would be a good choice in my opinion, and cheaper too.

Mobil 1 TDT 5w-40 is just fine. Since moving down to a warmer climate, I've changed my crankcase oil to Amsoil 15w-40 HD Diesel & Marine.

The Mobil 1 site recommended Mobil 1 0W-40 with a Fram paper filter - no special filter needed!

I agree with Kent. If you want to be prudent your best choice is to follow the manufacturer's recommend fluid and filters.
