W210 E320 - 2000 issue with check engine light.
I have a 2000 E320 with 80,000 miles only. My check engine light just started to come on. It did for about 1 day and it went away for about 7 days. It did this 3 time already. Right now it has not come on since a week. What could be the problem here?
I always use premium unleaded, i have 2 new cat converters replaced at the dealer about 10k miles ago, new fuel fiters, new aprk plugs, and new air filter. No issue with the car performance at all. What else could it be?
Thanks

The check engine light illuminating is usually a sign of trouble with one of the emission control components. The thing to do is to scan the car with an OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) scanner. They are inexpensive at places like Harbor Freight (about $50). If you don't want to bother then have an independent MB mechanic or a dealer do the scan. In the past parts stores like AutoZone used to do scans for free but some have posted they don't anymore. But you could call.
If you decide to do it yourself, you can post any codes here for help with an interpretation.
Good luck.

Please save
yourself a bunch of money and don't go to the dealer.
And do as above, post the codes when you have them. Don't do anything till you do.We can save you money.
You should have got here before the dealer reamed you for the bad cats

don't mean to be so detailed
but coolant temp, digital speed and digital rpm readings, charging system values and much more are all available on the cars onboard diagnostics.
A basic obd2 reader in the hands of the right user can move mountains
Perhaps you need more training with what one is capable of diagnosing.
You don't need to know much more than a p0170 p0173 obd2 code to know your fuel trim is off and why it is off.

Welcome to the forum -
Most of the people out here are not professional mechanics. Generally, they want assistance interpreting the 'P' codes from an OBD scanner. While there are a couple of thousand codes, there are perhaps ten or twelve that come up regularly pertaining to common component failures like the MAF sensor, O2 sensors, etc. I'm not sure knowing the code for a sluggish 2-3 shift in the transmission is going to help a lot for the average DIY.
But thanks for the info.

Snap on
and use on MB is a toy.
If it were a real shop it would have an sds and without proper training that info would be useless in the hands of someone that can't understand it.
$100 gets you real time scanner showing ft values. Most diy owners never even need to delve that far to solve issues.OBD2 codes and cel lights indicate very few issues that trigger everyday items. Not thousands as you seem to imply.
Glad you think it is so very complicated. It really isn't when you know what you are doing or can ask forums such as this for guidance.

Please! Will someone make me understand how to use the elm327 obd2 with my round 38-pin socket under the hood? Is there an adaptor that really works, cause I understand that they do not match the wiring..
Thanks a lot!
