double din creation
I have been looking for the double din wood dash trim forever and cant find it. I've heard of people cutting the wood between the radio and climate control and moving the climate control down. Does anybody have experience doing this without f*^king it up ???

Just missed it:

Check classifieds and eBay and one will pop up. Some audio shops can make you one or modify yours.

hey man...i considered cutting the trim too and moving the cc down low (even removing the storage compartment for a nice 3 din opening - there is also an ashtray delete part from MB, if you need more space), but you would need a donor to complete the trim properly.... i don't get along well with paint/glue/wait to dry/etc....i am fine with mechanical and electrical...so, for now and until i find all the parts i need to make a 2/3 din, i just swapped the hu with a 1 din (lost steering wheel control to hu, oh well i have everything else and i hate steering wheel controls anyways).....you know, you could do the cc swap with the hu and then install a 1 din 7-8" retractable screen - it'll slide out and up and won't block cc.....or, there are 5" screens that slide out and down.....let us know what you sort out....good luck!
....here's the stock cage...and a 7" blocking the cc with storage used for gear....

Some stereo shops can make one for you. If you want to get it coated with carbon fiber or something similar, you can hack it up more without worrying about damaging the wood. Just some ideas.
Also bear in mind that the factory COMAND wood trim is not Double DIN, it's actually slightly larger, so you'll have some space between the wood and the stereo you'll need to fill one way or another. One reason why doing a custom piece out of MDF and covering it with vinyl or carbon fiber may not be a bad idea.

I like the idea of a custom piece out of mdf.
I would just hate to have to wrap all the burlwood trim pieces in carbon fiber or vinyl.
i wonder what a good interior accent would be if i were to go custom.
I have a black exterior w/ a tan interior. ideas?

You could do tan vinyl to match the leather/plastic of your interior. That way it would look like the console was made of leather, assuming you could find something good looking.
