Ive searched the forums and could not find a straight answer. If I purchase a new headunit from Crutchfield can I install it with everything they send me and have no issues. Basically is it plug and play? I want to be able to run Pandora in my car and I dont have a connection. Thanks in advance.

I installed a Sony headunit from them with no issues. They sent me an adapter for the antenna with the kit.

One thing I remember from their installation instructions was that I DIDN'T have to split (cut in half) one of the larger plug-in connectors from the car going to the back of the new radio.

 

hey Paul.... should be no issues with crutchfield hu recommendation, just that you could find it cheaper at onlinecarstereo.com (and use discount code OCSSAVE15 for $15 off, but they don't 'give' you the harness adapter)!

i dropped the pioneer deh-6200bt into mine and it's fantastic! i don't really stream, but am sure that you shouldn't have any issues.

soon, i'll be changing out the 'old' stock bose speakers (keeping the bose amp) with the sound ordnance units from crutchfield - they offer 3yr warranty and have drop-in 5.25 front door, 3.5 rear door and 6.5 rear deck .....

btw .... make sure the hu you choose can drive 2/4 ohm at 2/4 Volt (stock bose amp needs 4V and stock speakers are 2 ohm) and that you have the antenna adapter (stock antenna connector is L-shape and won't go in all the way to make contact)

Man thanks for the heads up. Thats the EXACT head unit I ordered. $189 is better than the $300 I was quoted from a local place for a lesser HU (installed though). I just want to make sure it would be plug and play. Thanks again!

You need the harness (a VW harness made by Metra will normally work) and a european antenna adapter. Crutchfield should be able to send both of these.

Note that your steering wheel controls won't work. You'll need an additional adapter if you want to get that working (such as the PAC Audio controller).

 

Okay since I am upgrading the headunit I guess I'm gonna do the speakers also. So, there are 5.25's in the front doors, 3.25's in the rear doors and 6.5's in the rear deck, correct? Is there anything specific I need to look for? Should I keep all makes and models the same or can you mix and match? Do I need new tweeters? Also, is there anything special when doing the install? Cutting, drilling, etc. If I dont need tweeters I would like to stay around $200 for all 3 pairs if possible while making sure I am actually UPGRADING. Any help or previous experience would be great.

....the useless changer was the first thing i yanked from it .... the car weights a couple pounds less, goes a bit faster now, got more trunk space and i'm getting decent mileage too!

sound ordnance speakers p-35, p-52, p-65.... http://www.crutchfield.com/brands/sound-ordnance/ .... you might have to trim a little bit of the foam in the doors, but basically plug and play and you can install one pair at a time (6.5 then 5.25 then 3.5) to see how you feel about them .... if you have the money swap them all out and you'll enjoy the sound cause the stock speakers are 10-year old technology and material, eh!

About 6 months ago, I installed a Pioneer DEH-P7200HD unit in my wife's car, Bought it locally from Fry's Electronics, got the factory radio removal keys and antenna adapter and harness from Walmart (though the harness adaper was for another euro car that worked- I cant remember off the top of my head).

Anyway, installation was really simple, the only thing I do remember was the switched +12v line didn't come out of the harness its part of the canbus, so I used the cigarette lighter which is right there and it worked perfectly. I also bought the steering wheel stuff for the wheel controls, and that take 2 pieces, a swi-pac adapter for the pioneer, and a canbus adapter for the mercedes to swi-pac to work. After it was all said and done, took me and my son's about 3+ hours, just because we were really taking out time around all the trim pieces.

After all was done, it sounds great - I really like HD-Radio and it's free.... The radio itself is a little clumsy to navigate and the display is freakin' tiny - and I have a really hard time reading it - thank god it's my wife's car. SHE LOVES (loved) IT. Here we are six months later, and NOW she wants a touchscreen with Navigation! But that's another thread.

I can't speak for crutchfield, its been 10+ years since I personally bought anything from them, but I have never heard any negatives. They are always top notch. What I will say is: Make sure what you put in is what you really want, otherwise you'll be in the same boat I'm in, looking to replace it all later on.

And if you do a little searching, I can't remember where I saw it, but someone mounted the aftermarket radio in the cubby pocket section, where he could close the door and hide the radio - and left the becker unit (or at least the becker face) in the factory radio spot, had I seen that before hand, I would have done the same thing.

And IMO, the bass is really lacking with the bose system and an aftermarket radio. We ended up putting two 10's in the trunk, which solved that problem....

Thanks for that info. Now, those speakers are not expensive at all. Is there a reason for that? Are they really an upgrage? Why not anything like Alpine, Infinity, MB Quarts? Not arguing, just want to know why those? Thanks man. Headunit will be here tomorrow. Cant wait to install.

Also, I thought I had to buy 2 ohm speakers and the SO's are 4 ohm. Please help school a newbie. Thanks!

 

That is the problem with swapping the speakers. You are overdriving the amp, unless you find similar low-ohm replacement speakers.

 

hey Paul.... ditto Saintz.... the stock bose amp drives 2 ohm spkrs only .... so, if you keep the stock bose amp, you'll need 2 ohm speakers to replace the stock ones ....

fyi, i haven't bought the SO's for the MB yet, i'm getting the 5.25 for my jeep with the same pioneer hu .... if i like them and they sound good, then i'll get some for the MB and yank the bose amp and replace it with one that will drive 4 ohm speakers .... one step at a time, eh! ... good luck with the new hu!
