The sure way is to look in your owners manual for the applicable tire size.
Then look at and compare the size of the tires on the car. Do they all (4) match in size and manufacturer??
Now with that knowledge visit a couple of tire stores and listen to their sales pitch.
Now you really are dangerous, because you now know more that the average person and able to come back to the forum with specific questions about tires.
As an example-----"I understand that tire X is made with dihedrylmethelacetate"----is this a good tire for me.
Remember you are dangerous!! Good Luck

Tire Size
Here's my question: My e320 wagon needs tires.( 1998,older family car, wife drives it mostly) The factory tire is 215/55 R 16. Some Pirelli's are on sale but only 205/55 16s. If I buy them will that be OK or is there some problem doing that? Of course the tire store says it's fine, but they only want to sell tires. What do you guys think?

Do a search on the effects of tire width-----going smaller or going larger!!
However to answer your question-----I would go with what is specd by the factory.

I noticed that you had no R in your 205/55 16s. Did you forget the R or are you talking about non-radial tires? The 215s are wide tires. I doubt that 10 mm less width would be a problem, but I would not use anything but radials.

Check your spare and buy whatever that is. My car came from the factory with 215/55/R16 Continental ContiProContacts and I'm having another set mounted Monday. They also make an ExtremeContact now but I was told they are noisy.

You need the correct tyre size, I think it will upset the cruise control as it is governed by the speed of the tyre.

Although it will not make much of a difference, you shpould note that if you reduce the tyre width, you also reduce the tyre height (assuming the profile remains the same).

Assuming you are buying all 4....I doubt it will make much difference but make sure you get the proper speed and load rating. You might see subtle differences in ride, handling, and highway fuel mileage.
All in all unless the savings is substantial - I'm not sure I would go that route. As far as cruise control - it will not be affected. However, your speedometer will read a little faster than it does now.
Keep in mind that unless your spare is the same size you might have issues if you have to run on your spare.
