Cassette player won't work.

Hi I have a 98' e320 sedan and when I put a cassette in it makes a grinding noise, alternates between two tracks and then ejects it. I know something must be working cuz I put one of those cassette auxiliary cable things in it and was able to hear my phones music before it ejected it. Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix it? Would a head cleaner work?

By asking about cleaning the head it sounds like there is tape in the cassette. You do not want tape in the cassette. It is probably binding causing the auto reverse to kick in. Remove the tape by twisting it around a pencil

There's no tape in it I've tried different cassettes they all give the same issue. As I said i put one of those cassettes with an aux cable attached and could hear my music from my phone before it was ejected.

My apologies for not being more clear. By cassette I mean the cassette cartridge. Inside of the cassette cartridge is audio tape. This audio tape is not necessary in order for the Aux In feature to work. If you have tried multiple cassette cartridges without audio tape in them and still have the same problem than your cassette player, and by that I mean the device you are putting the cassette cartridge in, needs to be repaired.

I assume it needs some sort of repair as it doesn't work, I was just wondering if a quick fix such as one of those cassette head cleaners would benefit it. It seems to function normally (takes the tape right away, switches tracks, recognizes side a/b) it just won't play them could something be caught in there?

There are 2 separate things going on here. When you want to listen to your phone you need a cassette cartridge that has no tape in it. With no tape in the cassette cartridge there is nothing to bind the mechanism and the cassette should not eject.
As I understand the modification correctly, it disables the audio from the cassette player so you should not be able to hear what is recorded on the cassette tape. The noises you describe usually means the the tape transport; gears, belts, motors, are in need of repair. If the modification disables the ability to hear the actual cassette itself than no need for repair. Modify a cassette cartridge by removing all of the tape in it and just use your phone or other mp3 device.

No there is only one issue, it also does this when I attempt to play actual audio cassettes not only the auxilary jack adapters. It makes some grinding noise as if it cant spin the cassette tape, flips side a/b back and fourth then ejects anything i put in it.

Hey, did you manage to get a fix for this problem? My car is doing the same. Reads side a and b then ejects right away.
