When ever I hit a bump in the road, I hear a clunking overhead as if a cable is hitting the top of the roof. Does anyone know what this could be? If so, how do you fix it?
I am a little concerned about taking the headliner down since my car has side curtain airbags. Has anyone ever removed their headliner?
Thanks in advance for your help.

More than likely it'll be the sunroof cover jarring loose that's causing the banging. It's been a recurring theme with our cars. Mine does it every once in a long while. Someone mentioned that the dealer will take care of it by fitting a felt strip on both sides.

Sunroof, Sunshad and headliner rattles are the most annoying thing on the W210. So many people have rattles coming from the roof. I had rattles in my 98 E430 and still in my 02 E55. I have had each car fixed and repadded and the rattles over bumps seem to never stop. Somethings I hate to even used my roof sunshade or my sunroof.

Yeah, I'm really glad I don't have a sunroof but the stupid rear window shade used to rattle all the time so I stopped using it and tinted my windows. Good luck on the sunroof Chris...

Jago1244, What is the sunroof 'cassette'? Are there any part numbers on your invoice for this repair?
Mine continues to rattle despite being at the dealer 3 times for this. They've added the felt tape but it's not enough.
Thanks!

Try tapping on the back of the headliner before the rear dome light and see if it makes noise. I have replaced headliner for this problem.
You can fix it your self by pushing thin foam up in that area.

i see they also applied felt tape p/n 000-983-89-10 (i guess tape is tape).
i would assume the cassette is simply the frame around the sunroof mechanism. no part number indicated. sorry.
also, a long shot..if you keep your rear headrests down, they may bounce against the rear deck, creating another noise on bumps..i keep my middle one always down, and stuck some bubble wrap under it
